Dancing Across Borders is a beautiful documentary portrait of cultures, of love and friendship knowing no boundary, and of the beauty of dance--and its power to lift the soul. Young Sokvannara "Sy" Sar was a young, impoverished teen performing traditional dances in his native Cambodia, when suddenly his entire world changed. New York socialite and dance patron Anne Bass happened to see Sy perform while touring Cambodia--and she was so struck by his grace, his confidence, and his playfulness in his body that she arranged for him to come to New York to study ballet. Dancing Across Borders follows the journeys, both literal and figurative, of young Sy--who knew little English and had had no formal dance training. "There I was, 16 years old, surrounded by all these little kids" of age 7 or 8, Sy says of his first ballet classes. Yet the gift that Bass saw in the rough-hewn small-town boy manages to emerge, triumphant, like a lotus blossom in full bloom. Dancing Across Borders chronicles the misgivings of the ballet insiders, but also the respect the teachers and company directors began to feel toward young Sy--whose discipline and strict regimen is almost unbelievable. Sy spent many grueling months studying in New York, teaching his body the odd positions of classical ballet--and, ultimately, winning the hearts and minds of the most skeptical insiders. Sy's emergence as a gifted, riveting ballet dancer of the highest order is the great payoff of Dancing Across Borders. The feel-good factor is increased all the more by Sy's winning personality and adorable smile, as if he can hardly believe his good fortune. But it's the lovers of dance, and all things cultural, who will find much to love in this heartfelt, uplifting documentary. --A.T. Hurley
