In this three video series, Dr. Barry Prizant presents a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to enhance social communication and socio-emotional abilities for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other related disabilities. Developed with his co-collaborators: Dr. Amy Wetherby, Dr. Patrich Rydell, Emily Rubin, and Amy Laurent, the SCERTS Model promotes social communication and emotional competence into naturally occurring activities as part of everyday life.
The acronym "SCERTS" refers to the core components of the model: Social Communication (SC), Emotional Regulation (ER), and Transactional Supports (TS). This multidisciplinary, research-based model is designed for educators, parents, therapists, and other practitioners. It is applicable to classroom, home and community environments for children in early intervention through the elementary school grades.
Tape 1 discusses the characteristics of ASD and an overview of the SCERTS Model. Tapes 2 and 3 demonstrate the model's application for two different populations: children with ASD requiring more versus less support.
The SCERTS Model was designed for those interested in moving beyond currently available approaches, to a more comprehensive framework that builds meaning, logic, and predictability into daily functional activities for children with ASD and their social partners.
