Born Clive Campbell, DJ Kool Herc is responsible for laying the foundation to America's most pervasive genre of music. As a Bronx DJ during the early '70s, his style of extending the percussion sections of classic funk and rock tunes โ known as the "break" โ became what we now call the "breakbeat." From there emerged "break-boys" and "break-girls" (or simply b-boys and girls) and his signature calls like "To the beat, y'all! You don't stop!" formed the basis of rap.
