Dashiell Hammett was an American screenwriter, political activist and author of hard-boiled detective novels and short stories. He is best known for creating the characters Sam Spade ("The Maltese Falcon"), Nick and Nora Charles ("The Thin Man"), the Continental Op ("Red Harvest" and "The Dain Curse") and the comic strip character Secret Agent X-9. Hammett also served in the U.S. Army and the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps during World War I, and later as a cryptanalyst and journalist in the Army during World War II.
