Christy Mathewson, nicknamed "Big Six", was an American baseball pitcher, who played 17 seasons with the New York Giants. He was among the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, ranking in the all-time top 10 in several key pitching categories, including wins, shutouts and ERA. Mathewson was one of the first five members inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He also served as a Captain in the United States Army during World War I, with fellow ball players Lieutenant George Sisler and Captain Ty Cobb in the Chemical Warfare Service unit, commanded by Major Branch Rickey, the president of the St. Louis Cardinals.
