Description: Cheryl Christina Crane was born in Los Angeles in 1943, the only child of actress Lana Turner and restaurant owner and former actor Stephen Crane. Her parents divorced before she was a year old and her mother was given complete custody (with her father having visitation rights), although Cheryl was raised primarily by a nanny, governesses and her maternal grandmother, Mildred. Although well-provided for (lavish birthday parties, toys, clothing, boarding schools), Cheryl was often neglected by her parents, who were busy with their careers and love lives. Although well-provided for (lavish birthday parties, toys, clothing, boarding schools), Cheryl was often neglected by her parents, who were busy with their careers and love lives. She also suffered horrendous physical and sexual abuse by one of her stepfathers, actor Lex Barker. When Lana discovered that Barker had been molesting her daughter, she threw him out of the house and divorced him. While Cheryl was still recovering from that trauma, Lana began seeing Johnny Stompanato, whom, unbeknownst to her, was working for the notorious gangster Mickey Cohen. By the time Lana discover the truth about Stompanato, she was in too deep and he often physically abused her. When Lana tried to end the affair, he threatened her in her home, and Cheryl, terrified for her mother's safety, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and accidently stabbed the gigolo with it. Stompanato died instantly. A huge scandal at the time, Cheryl was ultimately cleared of murder, but found herself in reformatories and had several brushes with the law before entering a mental hospital. When she was nearly 19, she was released. Eventually, she began working in her father's chain of restaurants. In 1969 she met model Joyce "Josh" Leroy, who has been her partner since 1970. Both have real estate licenses, and they lived alternately in Hawaii and San Francisco. They are currently settled in Palm Springs.

In Lana's final years, mother and daughter were closer than ever. In 1988, Cheryl published her autobiography "Detour: A Hollywood Story". Since her mother' death in 1995, Cheryl has published four more books, one a coffee table book dedicated to her mother's life and career, "Lana: The Memories, The Myths And The Movies", and three in series of Nikki Harper Mysteries - "The Bad Always Die Twice", "Imitation Of Death" and "The Dead And The Beautiful". The main character, Nikki Harper, and her mother, former screen star Victoria Bordeaux, are obviously based on Cheryl and Lana.
