Born in San Jose, California, on September 17, 1955, Martinet spent part of his youth in Europe and became fluent in French and Spanish, while also speaking some Italian. He studied at the Drama Studio London.

Martinet's breakthrough came when he auditioned for the role of an Italian plumber at a trade show in 1991. Rather than using the harsher Brooklyn-style voice he initially considered, he created the warm, energetic Italian-American voice that became Mario's signature.

Beyond Mario, Martinet has an extensive video-game voice-acting career. Notable roles include Paarthurnax in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as well as characters in Ratchet & Clank, Skies of Arcadia, Shadow of Destiny, Runner3, and other games. He also voiced Magenta in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

In August 2023, Nintendo announced that Martinet would step away from recording character voices for its games and become a Mario Ambassador, allowing him to continue meeting fans and representing the Mario franchise around the world.

Martinet also appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), where he had cameo roles rather than voicing Mario himself.
