Winnie Sanderson (Hocus Pocus)

Posted : 1 year, 7 months ago on 1 October 2022 09:37

The Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus are one of the most legendary and iconic trios of all time. Of the three devious sisters, Winnie (Bette Midler) is by far the most powerful and driven witch. Winifred, Mary and Sarah were put to death in 1600s Salem, but a little spell and black candle brings them back to life on Halloween, 3 centuries later. Winnie is truly the brains behind the Sanderson sisters, and it is her devious nature and determination that almost helps them best the young heroes. Though she was ultimately defeated in the end, Winnie had one heck of a night, giving the world an amazing rendition of, “I Put a Spell on You."

An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Jack Black and Ben Stiller, I thought I might as well check it out. Indeed, with such actors involved, you have the right to expect at least a decent comedy. Indeed, they are usually pretty funny but, I’m sorry, this was just a rather lame movie. The whole "shit" thing was really stupid and, above all, the characters were just so annoying, definitely more annoying than funny and that's not a good thing when you are making a comedy. Even the great Christopher Walken couldn't save this wreckrage. I mean, when I saw him, I have to admit, I did get a smile on my face for maybe 10 minutes (that's quite an achievement) but then his character started to annoy me as well... Above all, the saddest thing was to see such a fine actress like  Rachel Weisz involved in this. Seriously, what on earth was she doing in such a lame comedy?!? Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen much worse and even though it was still watchable, the whole thing remained a failure and I don’t think it is worth a look.

If you haven't seen it, I envy you!

Tim (Ben Stiller) and Nick (Jack Black) are best friends, neighbours and co-workers. Tim is rising slowly through the ranks of middle-management and reaping the rewards of his efforts, such as a new Kidney shaped pool, whilst his best friend Nick has his head stuck firmly in dreamland. However after witnessing a dog owner cleaning up his dog’s mess, Nick has a get-rich-quick idea and offers Tim in on the deal. Sensible Tim declines the foolish concept, but unfortunately the new product actually works and almost limitless wealth falls into his Nicks hands. Tim must now watch with envious eyes as Nick enjoys the fruits of his new found wealth. Tim’s wife Debbie isn’t pleased because of their lost opportunity for wealth and as jealousy eats away at them both, Tim looses his family and his job. Enter the J-Man (Christopher Walken), as a guy-in-the-bar who encourages Tim to strike back at his nemesis. A drunken Tim takes him up on the offer and a series of consistently unfunny mishaps ensues. This is supposed to be a comedy with the potential for a moral tale, but it fails in both. Comedy moments are strained and it’s very hard to laugh at Ben Stiller, unless you are laughing at his acting of course, which in this film got him nominated for a Razzie (as worst actor). What could have been a modern day ‘It’s a wonderful life’ ends up just a silly tale of businessmen willing to pollute the world and sweep the evidence under the carpet in pursuit of wealth. As such it’s very hard to like either character and the movie ends with you wishing you hadn’t watched it at all. If you haven't seen this movie, I envy you!
