The Stranger, also referred to as The Unplanned Variable, is the player character and main protagonist of The Outer Worlds.
The Stranger was one of thousands of people selected to colonize Halcyon, proudly advertised as the only star system entirely owned and operated by corporations. With the promise of a 10 year journey that would only feel like minutes and a perfect society designed to maximize productivity with guaranteed full employment and only a minor term of service once they woke up, they embarked in 2285 aboard the Hope, the second colony ship bound for the system. But when a skip drive malfunction caused the ship arrive at its destination decades behind schedule, the Board chose to abandon the colonists, leaving the ship parked in orbit over the barren ice planet Typhon.
After 70 years in hibernation, The Stranger was revived by Phineas Wells on May 15, 2355.
