Sheena was the first female comic book character to have her own series that came out in spring 1942, beating Wonder Woman #1 that came out in the summer. Eisner has been quoted to say that her name was inspired by H. Rider Haggard's novel She. Sheena was conceived to be a female counterpart to Burrough's Tarzan.
