31. Professor Zoom

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 29 May 2022 11:34

Super speed for Reverse Flash Eobard Thawne may be his only superpower, but Zoom has not let that slow him down. Obsession drove him quickly to developing a plot to "become" and replace Barry Allen. He was so committed to taking over Allen's duties as Flash, he decided to play house with Allen's wife, Iris. When she didn't take to it, Zoom did what any man in his situation would have done: Vibrate his hand into her head, killing her.

Subtlety is not one of Zoom's strong suits (he is a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains, after all), but he does get results. Also, his time traveling ways help him get around certain things like schemes not going according to plan, or even his own death.

Zoom may be a villain too localized for his own good, but his murdering of Iris is an event people still talk about. We can see him getting an arc just as good as his turn as Barry Allen's nemesis, and we hope it happens sooner rather than later.

A good movie

Back in the 90's, I was a huge fan of Abel Ferrara's work and, back then, I spent a lot of time tracking down his movies. Indeed, Ferrara has never been an easy director but I always found his movies really mesmerizing. However, all the movies he directed during the last 10-15 years were more alienating than fascinating to watch which is just too bad. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it was with this movie that Ferrara finally managed to reach a wider audience. To be honest, it is not really a ground-breaking gangster feature but there was still a lot to enjoy here. Indeed, what I enjoyed the most was probably the really dark and gloomy mood, definitely a trademark in Ferrara's work. Furthermore, it is always neat when Christopher Walken finally gets the opportunity to play the lead and only him could play such a demented drug lord without sounding completely ridiculous. Anyway, 2 years after making this feature, Ferrara would come up with โ€˜Bad Lieutenantโ€™ which would be one of my all-time favorite movies. To conclude, even though it might not be a masterpiece, I thought it was pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Abel Ferrara's work.ย

Awful

Abel Ferrara is no Martin Scorsese, let that be known first. The long drawn out scenes a la Goodfellas serve no purpose leaving me to honestly describe this film as one of the worst gangster movies I have ever seen.
