Madre

The despotic and angry Madre, played by Simona Garbarino, is the primary cause of Jean Claude's distress. Nothing is known about her past, except that she married the baronet's father for "tax reasons" and that she gave birth at 40. An impossibly narcissistic woman, "Madre" involves Jean Claude in her personal dissatisfactions, forcing him unsuccessfully to see her not as a mother but as a desirable teenager just ready for the joys of love and new companions. When her son breaks the taboos she imposes on him and reveals his age, old age, or clumsiness, Madre systematically brings disaster upon him and threatens or attempts to kill him. In the eighth season, it is revealed that her real name is Maria Clara, although she is also called by other nicknames throughout the series.
