After being wounded by a bounty hunter while in his spirit fox form, Kurama sent his spirit into the human world, where his spirit took refuge within an unborn child, which had not yet gained a soul. He had planned to leave the human world once he had grown, but he stayed behind to care for his sickly human mother. He teams up with Gouki and Hiei to steal the legendary artifacts, so he can use the Forlorn Hope, a mirror which grants wishes (at the lost of the user's life) to save his mother, who was ill.
He informs Yusuke of his plan, so he can retrieve the forlorn hope for the spirit world, but when Kurama performs the ritual, Yusuke intervenes, and donates half his life energy, which ultimately saves Kurama's life.
Kurama later becomes an ally to Yusuke in his battles.

He later gains the ability to take his previous form, Youko Kurama.
