Issa Dee is a main character on Insecure. She is a 29-year old woman working as a Youth Liaison for the non-profit youth organization We Got Y’all. Entering the last year of her twenties, Issa is uncertain of both her career and love life, and believes that she only has a year to figure out her life.
Issa is in a comitted relationship with Lawrence Walker initially, and has been for five years. Issa becomes dissatisfied with the relationship — and Lawrence's behaviour — when he makes little effort to secure a job and continue their growth together.

Issa's view on the relationship changes when Issa's ex-boyfriend/fling from high school, Daniel King, contacts her for her birthday. They reconnect at a club and, despite warnings from Molly — and the fact that she is dissapointed he only wants sex[1] — the two have sex after he helps Issa at work when she hosts a career day for her students. Issa keeps this a secret, but at the We Got Ya'll fundraiser, both Daniel and Lawrence are present. This makes things complicated for Issa. Eventually, Lawrence finds out that Issa cheated on him, causing complexities within their previously-strong relationship.

Friendship with Molly
Issa and Molly represent a strong friendship that is balanced since they both complement each other. Occasionally, Molly points out that Issa is very selfish and inconsiderate because she makes a lot of situations about her. At the fundraiser, they get into an argument about this and Issa attacks Molly, citing that it is her own fault that she cannot sustain a relationship.

The two are on outs from then on, however later make up and become friends again when Molly drives Issa all the way from Malibu back to Inglewood so she can hopefully reconcile with Lawrence.[2]
