Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs) is the eccentric, obsessive, and highly intelligent protagonist of Re-Animator (1985), a cult horror classic based loosely on H.P. Lovecraft’s story Herbert West–Reanimator. West is a medical student with a god-like complex, fixated on conquering death itself. His life's work revolves around a glowing green serum he's developed, which can reanimate dead tissue—though the results are often grotesque, violent, and unstable.
Despite his genius, West is reckless and morally ambiguous, often putting science above ethics. His cold, clinical demeanor and complete disregard for the consequences of his experiments make him both fascinating and unnerving. Jeffrey Combs’ performance gives the character a weird charisma—equal parts mad scientist, dark comic relief, and tragic figure.
West’s character is central to the movie's tone: a blend of gruesome horror and dark comedy, and he remains one of the most memorable figures in 80s horror.
