Young Thaddeus Sivana was suddenly summoned one day in 1974 by the wizard Shazam at the Rock of Eternity as a candidate to inherit the sorcerer's powers, but upon failing a test of temptation, he is rejected and sent back to Earth, his ensuing shock causing a car accident that leaves his father disabled.

Spending the next few decades researching others' experiences of the phenomena, Thaddeus eventually figures out how to access the realm. Gaining powers when the orb that tempted him all those years ago, which contained vile demonic monsters known as the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man, embeds itself in his right eye socket, he defeats the wizard and sets out to defeat his chosen champion, Billy Batson, in order to claim the powers of Shazam for himself.
