Lots of fun to be seen in this movie

Posted : 1 year, 5 months ago on 5 December 2022 01:26

Men in Black is great fun from start to finish. If you care to look past the rather ridiculous plot (only occasionally), this is hugely enjoyable. The cinematography is skillful likewise with the direction, and the special effects are wonderful. The script is irreverent, and there are some truly great performances. Will Smith proves here he CAN act, and Tommy Lee Jones as usual is marvellous. Both make a unique and hilarious double act. Then there is fine support from underrated actor Rip Torn and from Linda Fiorentino, who is a talented actress that hasn't earned herself a high acting profile yet. The finale is a little overblown, but you cannot deny this is a fun film. 9/10 Bethany Cox

06. Darkseid

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 29 May 2022 01:38

The DC Universe is packed with powerful entities that could destroy worlds at a time, but none are as feared or brilliantly executed as Darkseid, Lord of the war planet Apokolips. The evil god has had quite a legacy crafted for himself since being created by Jack Kirby. Not too shabby for a character that first appeared in a Jimmy Olsen book, eh?

Darkseid's motivations are rather simple - conquer and control all life by unlocking and solving the Anti-Life Equation, something DC fans saw him achieve in last summer's Final Crisis event. Though the storyline technically took the New God's life, it's hard to imagine the heroes of DC won't find themselves face to face with the ultimate embodiment of evil at some point down the road.

Perhaps the most appealing trait of Darkseid is his lack of interest in direct, physical confrontation. The being formerly known as Prince Uxas has immense strength, endurance and eye beams that can disintegrate, teleport or torture opponents, yet he chooses to manipulate events from the shadows, allowing his minions to act on his behalf. Darkseid's involvement with the New Gods, including his rivalry with the Highfather, the planet New Genesis and the diplomatic exchanges of sons Orion and Mister Miracle add multiple layers to a being that might otherwise be yet another generic worldwide threat. We're certainly glad DC wouldn't allow Kirby to kill off this fantastic villain as he originally planned. Decades of spectacular tales would have been left on the table otherwise.

Men in Black

Posted : 4 years, 1 month ago on 25 March 2020 01:48

A six-issue independent comic book baked in hyperviolence about a group of (largely Aryan) secretive agents that use any means necessary to hide the existence of the supernatural from the public at large gets remade into a popcorn entertainment thatā€™s a lively buddy cop movie. If that sounds like a backhanded compliment, then it hit with the correct intention. The remodel of Men in Black softens the overall tone for a more playful one that largely works as some of Will Smithā€™s shtick has aged poorly.

Ā

Will Smith is a member of the NYPD that gets recruited by Tommy Lee Jonesā€™ Agent Kay to join the titular organization. Theyā€™re after a McGuffin in the form of a galaxy attached to a catā€™s collar while fighting off a roach-like alien thatā€™s taken Vincent Dā€™Onofrioā€™s skin as a disguise. Thatā€™s the basic premise of the film as it provides ample wiggle room for Smith to mug for the camera and deliver rapid-fire bits of humor in contracts of Jonesā€™ superior, flinty straight man form.

Ā

Thereā€™s a weirder, grosser, more morbid film flitting around the edges of the popcorn entertainment and these flashes keep the energy up and your attention engaged. A talking pug is cute, a tiny alien housed in someoneā€™s robotic head is funny, and Tony Shaloubā€™s ability to regrow his head is Cronenbergian body horror played as slapstick. These moments give some personality and flavor to what is otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable but generic buddy cop movie.

Ā

But the real MVP of the film is Dā€™Onofrioā€™s committed and completely grotesque performance as Edgar. Or maybe it is Rick Bakerā€™s creation designs, stunning makeup, and humoresque, lively puppetry. Or maybe itā€™s the zippy pacing and structurally foolproof screenplay that keeps things moving and developing at an organic, playful, occasionally macabre world for its actors to play in. However you look at it, Men in Black holds up surprisingly well given its age, moderate overreliance on special effects, and mid-90s flourishes (god, that terrible Smith rap).

A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 11 months ago on 7 June 2017 08:37

Of course, I already watched this movie. In fact, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though it is now already 20 years old, it still remains a fun movie. Sure, the concept was decent enough but , to be honest, it could have easily become a boring mess (see for example the recent 'R.I.P.D.'). Eventually, what made this movie really work was that they managed to find the right tone and, furthermore, with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, they had a fine duo as well. Back in those days, Smith just had his first box-office hit with 'Independence Day' and this movie was exactly the right move to further promote his career. Concerning the story, to be honest, I donā€™t think it was anything really mind-blowing though. I mean, sure, it was entertaining enough but it was also rather generic and predictable. The weird thing is that they actually messed up the ending in my opinion.Ā Indeed, while most blockbusters would make sure they provide an open-ending, in this movie, they actually managed to get rid-off of one of the best characters. To make things worse, they replaced him with a woman but how could Ā they bring her back in the following sequel since the damned thing was called 'Men in Black'?Ā Anyway, even though this movie was nothing really amazing, I really have a weak spot for the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Review of Men in Black

Posted : 9 years, 9 months ago on 15 August 2014 09:00

In a world where every Summer blockbuster is 2 and a half hours, filled with explosions, contains no interesting characters, and tend to follow strict formulas, it's refreshing to see a film like Men in Black. Whether the '90's were a better time for movies is a debate for another day, but Men in Black seems to be in favor of supporting that theory. It's not a perfect film, but it does a heck of a lot right.

Men in Black creates a world in which aliens exist (around 1,500 of them can be on the Earth at any given time), though they tend to masquerade as humans. Most of them prefer to just live normal lives, but others want to reek havoc. The MIB organization is in charge of keeping these aliens in line, and making sure that other humans don't learn of the aliens' existence. The film is specifically about Agent K, who is training rookie Agent J, as both J and the audience learn about the aliens that exist all around us.

Men in Black is a comedy that provides consistent laughter. So it essentially accomplishes its mission. But Men in Black takes things a step forward by providing likable characters, an interesting premise, and solid performances.

There aren't many smiles or chuckles to be had in Men in Black, as the film seems to be striving almost exclusively for laughter. Not every gag works, but the vast majority of them are successful. The most notable source of humor comes from a device that the MIB use to erase specific memories from normal humans so that they don't remember any of the aliens they might have seen. This device is used nearly a dozen times over the course of the film as an amusing running gag that feels fresh and hilarious each time it's utilized. The secret is in its variation. The gag is never used the same way twice, which is just one example of the added effort the filmmakers have put into this film.

The effects and make-up used in this film hold up surprisingly well. Not every effect works perfectly (there is some definite use of green-screen), but they look good enough to avoid unintentional chuckles or distractions. And the alien designs themselves, are creative and unique.

Even more refreshing is that the film never tries to accomplish too much. It is satisfied to be a sci-fi comedy, and generally avoids pitching in random sub-plots. The exception is a tastefully handled back story for Agent K's character involving his wife, though it only takes up about 90 seconds of the film, and is actually very sweet. The ending itself, actually, also is subtly poignant and interesting. It works on levels you wouldn't initially expect.

Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K is the clear standout of the cast. While many are tired of seeing this sort of fast-talking grump that Jones has played dozens of times (to be fair, he really isn't that grumpy in this film), the character still works because of Jones' excellent performance. Will Smith is also engaging in a lead performance as Agent J. Love him or hate him, no one can deny the energy and enthusiasm he brings to the film, and his chemistry with Jones is superb. Other notable performances come courtesy of Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D'Onofrio, Rip Torn, Tony Shalhoub, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Mike Nassbaum and Richard Hamilton.

Danny Elfman makes an odd choice for this score, and ends up playing it relatively safe. It never seems to have any of the zaniness of energy one would expect, which causes it to seem very flat and uninteresting. It may be represented better outside of the film, but within the picture, it's a disappointment.

Men in Black is a joyous comedy. It loses a little steam by the time it reaches the third act, but the blissfully compact 98 minute run-time insures that the film doesn't overstay its welcome. In short, it's funny, well-acted, fresh, and memorable. What more could you ask of a sci-fi comedy?

Funny/Imaginative Sci-Fi Flick

Posted : 11 years, 11 months ago on 24 May 2012 09:15

Right from the beginning of this film, the story grabs the viewer's attention because the audience will have no idea to what is going on. It is not until minutes later when everything is revealed. Even then, the audience will have questions galore. No problem folks, all your personal questions will be answered when Will Smith enters the equation. Once that happens, things speed up real fast.

Starring as the attractive lead in this film is Will Smith. Smith is New York cop who does his best to be the cop that he is. He's much better than his fellow officers, that's for sure. I love the way Smith talks. It seems very natural for him to talk the way he did. This is funny to watch because Smith's character has a wisecrack for almost any comment or explanation. Tommy Lee Jones plays the mentor of Smith. What makes Jones a good teacher is how he describes things, how he reacts to things, and how he handles things. It's all very serious but in a way, Jones is always goofing around. I really don't think he intends to, but that's how he comes off; as a joker. For example when he hands out the hand guns to Smith, he says "Series 4 De-atomizer". Smith's response, "Now that's what I'm talking about", but instead Smith is handed the "Noisy Cricket" which is not even big enough for a hand, more like your ring finger. Is Jones being serious, absolutely, but Smith doesn't know that! I was amazed that in the script they didn't have Smith go crazy trying to understand the logic behind every reason that was given.

Playing the villain, Edgar, is Vincent D'Onofrio. Really though he's not a villain, he's just one ugly bug-like alien. He's my favorite character in this film. The reason behind this is how his character is in general. The personality of Edgar is just plain rude. A rudeness where he just wants to get what he needs in a very cumbersome fashion. One of the best characteristics I like about Edgar is the way he walks. It's a very choppy walk, almost like he has ants in his pants (pardon the pun). Edgar too, has some really funny lines. And that's is just three characters! There is so much to see here, it is unbelievable. So many aliens, so many weapons, so much fun.

To wrap things up, this movie does have action, but it heavily relies on science related material. So the viewer will see a lot of explosions but that's because the Men in Black always have little trinkets up their sleeves that's not done the old fashion way. It's almost like they make reference to Inspector Gadget (1999) with all the tools they have at their disposal. The difference is that none of those things come flying out of their hats or something like that. The other great thing is the music, provided by the talented Danny Elfman. The main title itself is very catchy. The music has a very science fiction tone to it, which is good, because that magnified the feeling of it.

Men In Black has witty humor and great characters that can make all the scenes a blast (sometimes literally). As for the special effects, they have their own uniqueness that makes it irresistible to only see one at a time.
