Charlie Utter is a close friend and travelling companion of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, who he often cares for when she is drunk. He allies closely with Seth Bullock and befriends Joanie Stubbs. He eventually opens and runs a mail and freight business in Deadwood. His character is based on the real-life Charlie Utter, who was good friends with the real-life Wild Bill Hickok.
