Cat Ellington was born Kimberly Monique Hart in Chicago to unwed parents, Linda Marie Hart and restaurateur Ezell Ellington-Jenkins. Raised with her older brother, RaVan, in a single-parent home, Ellington, nicknamed "Cat" by one of her educators and music mentors, began writing lyrics and music in 1981. She completed her first song, "The Baby's Song," in that same year when she was just ten years old.
