Burl Ives was an American singer and actor of stage, screen, radio and television best known for his roles in "So Dear to My Heart" (1948), "East of Eden" (1955), "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958), and as Rufus Hannassey in "The Big Country" (1958), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Ives was drafted into the United States Army during World War II where he joined the cast of Irving Berlin's "This Is the Army". When the show went to Hollywood, he was transferred to the Army Air Forces.
