He was a journalist and drama editor for the 'New York Mail' and the 'New York World' before becoming assistant to Broadway theater director and producer Arthur Hopkins in 1917.
Three years later he produced his first play 'Enter Madame' (1920). Subsequent successes included 'Miss Lulu Bett' (1920), 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' (1922), 'Loose Ankles' (1926), 'The Ladder' (1926), 'Strictly Dishonorable' (1929), 'Personal Appearance' (1934), 'Kiss the Boys Goodbye' (1938), 'Janie' (1942) and 'Harvey' (1944).
