Spears began her career in the early 1990s as a cast member of the musical Ruthless! and the television show The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. Her first three studio albums—...Baby One More Time (1999), Oops!... I Did It Again (2000), and Britney (2001)—each topped the US Billboard 200, with the former two ranking among the best-selling albums of all time. She made her film debut in Longshot (2001) before co-starring in Crossroads the following year. Her next two studio albums, In the Zone (2003) and Blackout (2007), were influenced by hip-hop, dance, and electronic genres. The former included the single "Toxic", which won the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording.

Amid years of public scrutiny and mental health challenges, Spears was placed under a conservatorship in 2008. That same year, she released her sixth studio album, Circus, which was led by her second US number-one single, "Womanizer". Over the next several years, she released the studio albums Femme Fatale (2011), Britney Jean (2013), and Glory (2016). By the late 2010s, she had earned more than two dozen US Top 40 hits, including two more US number-ones, "3" and "Hold It Against Me". In 2019, Spears withdrew from regular concert touring to focus on her conservatorship case, sparking the #FreeBritney movement and the documentary Framing Britney Spears. In 2021, she publicly testified against her family and management for maltreatment, which lead to the dissolution of the conservatorship. Her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, debuted atop The New York Times Best Seller list.

With over 150 million records sold worldwide, Spears is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with Nielsen SoundScan ranking her the fourth best-selling female album artist of their era. Forbes listed her as the world's highest-paid female musician twice, in 2000 and 2012. Spears has received numerous industry awards, including one Grammy Award, six MTV Video Music Awards, and seven Billboard Music Awards (including the Millennium Award).
