Although better known as the creator of Raffles, the charming burglar, Hornung also wrote some impressive novels, such as this story of a woman acquitted of murdering her husband, yet convicted in the court of public opinion. The explosive twists of plot leading to her reprieve from prejudice makes this a superb work.
