Description:
Fran Peavey is a social change worker who also calls herself a dissident. By Life's Grace: Musings on the Essence of Social Change consists of a collection of her essays. In one of them, she describes putting down a newspaper she has finished reading, closing her eyes, and dreaming that she is holding "the round globe in my arms like a baby." Her fingers surround the nations of the world and all the people who, like her, yearn for peace. A thought passes through her mind and she realizes, "There is no way to invent a way out of the suffering of the present. It simply has to be lived and loved now in the real."

Fran Peavey believes in "heart politics" and has over the past 25 years tried to break down the walls which divide people from each other. She has worked for the homeless, protested against nuclear plants, assisted refugees, and consulted various organizations around the world on social change. One of her favorite projects has been an effort to save the Ganges River in India.
Whether she is writing about the immorality of the Gulf War, the inhumane treatment of AIDS victims, or the value of citizen diplomacy, Peavey's spiritual perspective shines through. Weaving between these essays are prayers and poems which signal her belief in the intuitive and creative dimensions of politics.
By Life's Grace is an energizing and enlightening read. It may convince others to join Peavey and become agents for social change. It may revive activists who have been burnt out trying to do the right thing. Best of all, it may engender greater interest in heart politics. We all need to nurture the hurting world by holding it in our arms and expressing our love for all its creatures.
