The aim of this book is to explore the life of the Jews in ‘old’ Poland up to the third partition of the country in 1795. Specific areas of investigation include an account of the evolution of the Jewish presence in Poland and how it compared with Jewish life elsewhere, an assessment of the effectiveness of the institutions of Jewish autonomy, and an overall evaluation of the ‘status’ of the Jews in that country.
