in 1939 Alf Blackburn was a seventeen year old bricklayer from County Durham; he was called up to work on coastal defences and other government contracts deemed necessary for the war effort. Just like many other young men he was keen to join the army and 'do his bit.'
In 1941 he received his papers to report to Cleethorpes to begin training for active duty. He then went on to serve with distinction in the North African Desert, Sicily and Normandy, landing on Gold Beach on D-Day. On the 17th June he was blown up by a mortar bomb and he describes in striking detail the sensations that he felt. He was extremely lucky to survive
