They are a multinational group, with members from South Korea, New Zealand and Thailand. They debuted with the two singles "Boombayah" and "Whistle" from the single album Square One on August 8, 2016.
YG Entertainment began to reveal the lineup of Black Pink on June 1, 2016. This marked the culmination of some four years of teaser videos and appearances from possible members of a planned girl group variously billed as "YG New Girl Group" and "Future 2NE1". The members of Black Pink were introduced individually each week, with the first member officially confirmed for the lineup being Jennie, who had previously collaborated with artists of the same agency such as G-Dragon and Lee Hi. On June 8, the second member was revealed to be Lisa, who was first introduced to the company in 2012 and featured as a model for YG Entertainment's clothing line NONA9ON. The following week, YG Entertainment revealed the group's third member, Jisoo, who had appeared in several music videos and modeling endorsements as well as a cameo in the KBS drama The Producers. On June 22, the final member was revealed to be Rosé, whose vocals featured anonymously on G-Dragon's song "Without You" in 2012.
Shortly before their debut, YG Entertainment's YouTube channel uploaded a video of the group performing Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money" with choreography by Parris Goebel. The group's final lineup and name was confirmed on June 29 .Their debut was originally scheduled for late July, but was postponed to August 8.
Black Pink made their official debut on August 8, 2016, at 20:00 KST, when their single album Square One was digitally released. They are the first girl group to debut under YG Entertainment in seven years. Black Pink held a debut showcase on August 8, which was broadcast live on Naver's V-App at 15:00 KST. The music videos for their two lead singles were broadcast through the showcase prior to their official release. "Boombayah" was produced by Teddy Park, who also co-wrote the single with Bekuh Boom. Its music video was directed by Seo Hyun-seung, who previously directed "I Am the Best" by 2NE1 and "Fantastic Baby" by Big Bang. The second title track to be announced was the "minimal hip hop trac "Whistle",which was produced by Teddy Park and Future Bounce, with lyrics by Teddy Park and Bekuh Boom.
