Bill Rees started his radio and television news career at WKBV-AM in Richmond, Indiana, his place of birth. Later radio jobs included WAVI-AM (now WDAO) in Dayton, Ohio, WOWO in Fort Wayne, and WCFL-AM in Chicago, Illinois. He became a daytime news anchor on ABC Radio in New York in 1972.
Rees moved to television as a daytime news anchor at WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio, and then evening anchor and program host at WAST-TV (later renamed WNYT) in Albany, New York. By early 1979, Rees had begun a 17-year tenure at KPLR-TV in St. Louis, Missouri, as an anchor and later news director. There, he won Emmy awards for his documentary work
