Born Dorothea Elizabeth Brown in Portland, Maine, she started her career with her 3 aunts, Dot, Muriel & Eldra (she took her mother's place after her untimely death in an auto accident), as "The Four Chapman Sisters" locally and then went on to New York City where they worked on the Keith & Orpheum Circuit as "The Four Eddy Sisters", and "The Four Real Sisters".
