Alexander Mackendrick was an American-Scottish director and professor. Born in Boston, he later moved to Scotland. He is known for his films "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), "The Man in the White Suit" (1951) and "The Ladykillers" (1955). During World War II, Mackendrick was worked for the Ministery of Information making British propaganda films. In 1942, he went to Algiers and then to Italy, working with the Psychological Warfare Division. In 1943, he became the director of the film unit and approved the production of Roberto Rossellini's early neorealist film, "Rome, Open City" (1945).
