Description: Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson, May 26, 1886, in Seredzius, Lithuania) was an immigrant son of a Russian Jew and became a popular singer and a star of stage, radio and vaudeville. He is best known, however, for his appearance in one of the first talkies The Jazz Singer, (the first film with sound to enjoy wide commercial success), in 1927. (See also blackface). Jolson described himself as The World's Greatest Entertainer. He died on October 23, 1950 and was interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California. ... (more)
