But what many donโt know is that Giddings was also a pioneer in technical diving out of necessity for his film projects. He was the first to dive with mixed gases on the Andrea Doria in 1969, the first to discover, dive and penetrate the Japanese I-169 submarine in Truk Lagoon in 1973 and heโs been incorporating innovative gear, such as rebreathers, in his projects for years. Giddings also pushed underwater film techniques and technology for "The Abyss" and the film went on to capture an Academy Award nomination for Outstanding Cinematography. More recently, he served as co-producer and director of underwater photography on James Cameron's spectacular Titanic released in 1997. The film, of course, broke all box office records in film industry history as well as dominating the 1998 Academy Awards.
