The name 2NE1 combines the phrases "21st century" and "new evolution", and is pronounced "twenty-one" or "to anyone".They first appeared in "Lollipop", a commercial campaign with Big Bang for LG Electronics, and their debut single "Fire" was released on May 6, 2009. Since then, the group has released two extended plays, 2NE1 and 2NE1 2nd Mini Album, and one studio album, To Anyone. Their first EP, 2NE1 spawned the number-one single "I Don't Care", which won them the "Song of the Year" award from the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Their follow-up singles, such as "Go Away", "Lonely" and "I Am The Best" were similarly successful, with "I Am the Best" winning 2NE1 their second "Song of the Year" award.
2NE1 officially debuted in Japan in September 2011 with a mini album titled NOLZA, which contained re-made versions of their Korean songs. Since then, the group has released one mini-album, one studio album and two physical singles in Japan.
Representing South Korea, 2NE1 emerged as the winner in the voting competition for "Best New Band in the World", which was an international competition held by MTV Iggy. The band was officially crowned the winner on November 10, 2011.
The Fanclub of 2NE1 was called Blackjack, which is a reference to the card game Blackjack, also known as Twenty-one. 2NE1's official color was Hot Pink and their official fanlights were shaped like white-winged spades.
2NE1 was a South Korean hip hop/pop girl group signed to YG Entertainment. The discography consists of one studio album, two extended plays, and thirteen singles. CL, Bom, Dara, and Minzy make up the quartet. The group established themselves in the Korean music scene in March 2009, with the release of "Lollipop", a collaboration with label mates Big Bang. The single would go on to top the monthly Gaon Chart in April that same year.
"Fire" served as the official debut single and was released on May 6, 2009. "Fire" peaked at number one for May on the Gaon Chart. The song served as the first single for the group's debut extended play, 2NE1, released July 8, 2009. That album would peak at number one and go on to sell over 165,000 copies. "I Don't Care" served as the lead promotional single during this period, and also reached number one. The reggae remix of the song was released as the next official single. After 2NE1, the group began to promote their own solo singles, "Kiss", "You and I", and "Please Don't Go". Each would go on to chart in the top 10 of South Korea. In February 2010, the group released their fourth single as a group, "Try to Follow Me". The song was labeled as a "bridge between their old style and their [...] new one", because of the heavy use of auto-tune. 2NE1 released their first full length studio album To Anyone on September 9, 2010. It was anchored by promotional singles "Clap Your Hands", "Go Away", "Can't Nobody", and "It Hurts (Slow)". Each charted in the top 5 on the South Korean record chart. "Don't Stop the Music" was 2NE1's first official international release and fifth official single as a group because it was meant as a "special gift for Thai fans".
Following the suspension of Bom's contract due to her 2014 drug scandal, other members began exploring independent ventures, sending the group effectively into hiatus. Dara re-established her acting career by starring in web dramas such as Dr.Ian and We Broke Up, as well as KBS's Missing You. Minzy opened the Millennium Dance Academy. CL embarked a solo career in the United States with the release of "Hello Bitches" from her upcoming EP Lifted. The group's only activity in 2015 was a surprise performance at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. After CL's performance of her solo singles "The Baddest Female" and "Hello Bitches", all members reunited to perform "Fire" and "I Am the Best". The performance is now the most-viewed MAMA performance by a girl-group. It was applauded and as a result, was listed as one of the best performances of 2015 by Fuse. Despite not having made a comeback, 2NE1 nonetheless was the 16th most reblogged K-pop group on Tumblr for 2015. Additionally, both 2NE1 and CL were given a nod by Spotify in their "Year in Music" Twitter Campaign for each achieving over one million listeners, and being played a "staggering" 165 years worth when combined. They also won China's 2016 Korea First Brand Grand Prize award for "Top 10 Most Anticipated K-Stars of 2016".
After a year of hiatus, YG Entertainment confirmed the departure of Minzy in April 2016, stating that the group will continue as a trio. Later that November, however, YG Entertainment announced the disbandment of the group. CL and Dara remained signed as solo artists, while Bom was released from her contract. A last single, "Goodbye", was released in January 2017 as a farewell to their fans, inspired by a letter CL initially wrote to Minzy. The song topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. ...
