I haven't seen the original so I can't say if this remake is better or worse. Anyway, from what I heard so far, it is probably one of the few remakes which is actually better than its predecessor. Indeed, it has become rightfully a classic. When I saw this, I was a kid and I thought it was rather fascinating. It is visually striking and quite frightening and Cronenberg has managed to add some new, contemporary elements to the story. This flick combines the gruesome nightmarish horror style typical to Cronenberg and a more mainstream horror style that you would find in more commercial horror flicks. I believe that this combination worked pretty well. I should see it again since I haven't seen it for years but I still have found memories of this movie since it must have been one of the first horror flick I saw. To conclude, I really enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Cronenberg's work.
