Why do you vote for reviews?

Is there a specific quality you look for when reading a review before you give it a vote?

I personally look for 3 things:
1. Whether it reflects my opinion on the Item. As in they have said everyhing I would have.
2. Whether it has an interesting revelation (something I didn't notice) or funny subtext.
3. Whether it is written to a degree beyond excellence. Expressing yourself in a way that not only screams writing talent but puts forward your opinion (whether it opposing mine or not) in such a clear manner that is deserves respect.

Having at least two of the above guarantees a vote from me. What about the rest of you mugs?

I'd vote if....

1. It had correct grammar and punctuation, and a reasonable placing of words.
2. If the review is about the size of a paragraph.
I mean, not like WOW I LIKED IT I LOVE IT.
3.If I liked it.

I generally look for a good quality of English as a priority. I do like it to be a decent length too, without either I will rarely read past the opening sentences.

I only really read reviews of items I've seen/heard etc to avoid spoilers and make sure I have the right to vote! I do vote for reviews that express a different opinion to mine as well, as long as it's a good opinion and not a misunderstanding that they're presenting. That's my favourite kind of vote to give!

Finally, if someone writes a good review but hasn't done many, I will often vote for it to try and get them to contribute more.

I tend to give a vote not if the person wrote what the game (/movie/music) is about, but what they liked/didn't like about it. I guess I base it kind of like my own reviews, talk about the game (not a complete synopsis, I can get that anywhere online). How were the controls? Are the graphics good? Any surprises? Frustrations? Those are just some of the things, stuff I wouldn't know since I haven't played it. If they don't like it, no prob, they should have a good point, and maybe a bit of humor. No spoilers or at least give a noticeable warning, no bad grammar, and no single sentences.

And definitely no points for saying:

"OMG THis game iz the cooolest EVAR!!!1!!"

I think I would give you negative points for that. If I could.

Spongy, you're right.... I've been noticing such reviews... and I'd never ever give them ANY votes.

Well... I tend to only vote things that I've already seen/heard/played and if I tend to agree with what the reviewer is saying. Punctuation, grammar, and the like is a given and reviews aren't even given the time of day if the reviewer can't find the time to attempt to write in a legible manner. Little mistakes are forgiven of course, no one is perfect after all. But I'm just so dang close it scares me :P
Oh and I tend not to vote for comments that much. Or one-liners, unless I feel that the one-liner is witty, smart, and stuff like that.

I'll tell you what I hate/wont be voting for. Every single review (other than Prelude's, the only one of quality and length) for 'Titanic'

www.listal.com/movie/titanic

I vote for a well written, fair lengthy and well expressed review. Whether I agree or not is not always a factor.

dionysian.listal.com/viewentry/97395

The above review for example, I love.

I vote for it if it is a well written review, not necessarily if I agree with it. But that does mean if it gives a valid argument of the item being good or bad.

I vote if...

1) It is legible, meaning people can actually understand it (Basically, little to no computer talk)
2) If it actually looks like they payed attention
3) If it Seems to have very powerful words in it that just move you to want to(or not want to) watch the movie

I'll add more when I think of them

I know something I DON'T like:

When people vote because they love the character in the review and they don't even care what it says
Pizeta 17 years ago at Apr 5 17:34 -
I read reviews only of movies that I've never watched.
If they convince me to watch it or skip, I'll vote them

I don't vote reviews longer than 20 lines. I don't have enough time and will to read it

My gosh, I could like any number of things about a review. I'll either vote if I like something about it or see something that could be useful to others.

Here are the biggies:
1. Narrative approach
2. Important factual tidbit / trivia
3. Informative overviewing
4. Thorough stating of one's opinion
5. Who will and won't like it?

Punctuation/grammar... That's just something that goes into language itself.
ANBU Sasaki 17 years ago at Apr 5 18:05 -
You can mean by that this:
2 examples:

"I'd like ice cream to have cuz love I it"
or
"I'd like to have ice-cream, because I love it."

i will vote reviews because if i like them then i will and it has the correct types of spelling i will. If it has words such as 'dis, mii, ye' and all those other words i don't vote because i hate it when people talk or type like that i never know what they are saying i find them lazy as well.

I will vote for one of these two reasons:
1. The review is entertaining by being funny or noticing things I didn't or 'flowing' really well.
2. Useful info efficiently conveyed. SUPPORTING EVIDENCE. The review is not too long. The reading level is not too high. The terminology is not too wishy-washy.

Only if i have seen/heard already. I ignore teh synopsis when considering to vote for reason 2 obviously.

Hello you grammar nazis. IMHO if you put grammar as really big thing you just don't know what to post.

I don't have a 'list', I just read the review and, If I agree with it or just think the person who wrote let it idea really clear, I vote.
