I've been working on a new version of Listal for quite a while now and it's almost ready for release.

I have created a duplicate test site which has a copy of the database from a few months ago, accessible here:

www.betalistal.com

You will need to login to access the site, also since the site runs on a old copy of the database any recent password changes will not work and any recently created accounts will not work.

The new site should go live on the main listal.com domain in the next 1-2 months

As its a completely separate duplicate database, any changes made on the beta site will not affect the main site and new additions or lists added to betalistal will also be lost when the new site is eventually released. In other words the beta site will be wiped after the new code goes live on listal.com

New features

1. New categories
2. New site design and header
3. New profile page (Not finished yet)
4. New wider collection view with new display modes.
5. New recommendations page
6. Image lists and list of lists can now be in a specific category
7. New display modes for custom lists.
8. New bookmarklet to add items to Listal while browsing the web: www.betalistal.com/add
9. Lists can contain items from any category (e.g. movie lists can contain books or people)
10. Spelling corrections when searching
11. More items are published to the update feed. (e.g. when adding items to lists)
12. Pagination has been improved so you can skip to the last page or skip forward 10 pages
13. When viewing landscape images the view will default to wide layout
14. You can view your collection across all categories e.g. view all items added across all categories, apply tags over all categories.

Not yet completed

1. Adding new items to custom lists from the bookmarklet
2. Choose the categories you want to see on the homepage and around the site.
3. Notifications on the homepage
4. Compatibility percentages on profiles and recommended by links.

Not working yet

1. Fictional characters category does not work yet.

Please let me know what you think so far and post any bugs or feedback.

Had a quick look, looks very clean. I'll leave it to others to ask endless questions about not much at all. Good work.

Thank you! Love the new features! :)

Just one thing: my Most watched TV actors & actresses page in the beta is still showing the *movie* actors, not the TV ones. Same glitch as in usual Listal.com.
Anyway, that page is not linked yet in "My Stuff" menu (there's a tvshows link instead of /tv, so I guess you might still be working on it.

Question: is this page for Tristan Tzara in the new Art & Design category www.betalistal.com/art/tristan-tzara a page for the person? I don't think so, as he is in People www.betalistal.com/tristan-tzara already.

^ I was testing the various add functions with the bookmark tool. Anything I added I was told would be deleted once the full current site is imported to the new site.

Thanks jaytoast for the reply!
Anyway, I feel some notes are needed to explain how to use the new categories, so that Listal users don't add artists and designers to Art & Design, models to Fashion, and so on... They are people so they should be added to People anyway, if I understand correctly. :)

I just tested the beta. It feels really great! Thanks for the great work. Can't wait to see the final version.

A quick question about the images:
The high Quality of the images will be again limited?
La Dame Blanche 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 26 14:10 -
... some images disappeared :(

Thank you for the comments so far, I have been making progress on fixing bugs and implementing some of the missing features. In the last few days I have released an update enabling you to add a custom image to the profile header and also a background image. I have also created a secondary about profile page which contains 'about me', stats and profile comments. You can access the profile design page here:

www.betalistal.com/user/editstyle

Answers to a few comments:

What i didn't find is The Friends section. followers and following is there.

Friends will be removed since it doesn't serve a purpose on the site (all functionality had been moved to followers)

A quick question about the images:
The high Quality of the images will be again limited?

I have no immediate plans to link to higher resolution images, although perhaps as a paid subscription feature. Although landscape images will now default to a wider view as shown here: www.betalistal.com/viewimage/4765056

... some images disappeared :(

What images specifically are you referring to?

On the beta site I can still see my 'friends' ratings for a film but it doesn't show my Listal contacts average rating for a film.

So, my question are:

Will the people I follow now become part of friends ratings that I see when I visit a film page?

Will the average rating of my friends/contacts for a film disappear?

The average rating is actually one of the things I find the absolutely most useful tool and wish I could order lists by contacts ratings just like I can order it by IMDb rating or Listals ratings.

IMDb ratings are always skewed to recently released films. IMDb's "Top 50 Thrillers" always has some just released in the theaters action film that takes months to finally drop off the list after it is has been released to dvd and a wider audience rates it far lower.

Listal's ratings are skewed because of the point system and some users who rate ever single film ever made a 9 or 10. If only two people have rated a film (that has never been released on any format) and those people have rated the film a 10 it will be at the top of a list sorted by Listal ranking.

As far as getting recommendations for a film or book Listal's contacts rating is awesome. There isn't anything like it on IMDb, iCheck, Criticker or any other site. I pretty much never want to know what IMDb thinks of a film... I want to know what my friends think of a film.

Haha... ok so a little long winded... just frightened of losing that feature.

Some comments:

This looks clean, which is a blessing, and I guess I'll get used to it, but the design of the profile page doesn't look satisfying. I think the update feed looks messy - it was clearer when it was with stars, not points, and you could see clearly all the latest rated items. Also the comments section in the about page looks somewhat messy.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a possibility to tag movies when viewing my recently watched movies. It was easier to tag them when I could see them all on the same page (a possibility for mass tagging would also be nice).

It would also be nice to have the possibility to eliminate some items from the recommendations lists if you don't want to see them (for example in Rateyourmusic this is possible). For example I get recommendations like Santa Sangre and Ace in the Hole in the movies section, but I already know these films and will watch them sometime even without recommendations. It would be nice if I could hide these recommendations and dozens of others so the really interesting ones for me would get shown first and I wouldn't have to scroll so much.

Otherwise I'm glad the site is getting some new developments.

EDIT. THIS is especially great:

"3. Choose the categories you want to see on the homepage and around the site."

Yes, it looks very nice, but everything seems like it went back in time. The lists are not the same that I have right now. They are just like the lists I first made when I first made my account. For example, take a look at this. This is my modern list. This is the same list but a long time ago. Yes, they do have different names but I changed the list as time went on. Here is a list by another Listal user now (and I'd bet it's the same list), and here it is on the updated site. The new one has many more lists added to it, and is therefore "Newer". If you fix that and modernize it, I say that the update is a go!

I would say that a great addition to this site would be to be able to fix a Default List just like any other list. You could make it Public, Private, you could change its name, things like that. I think that would be great.

Hmmm, looks pretty promising, Tom. You've really implemented a great deal of new categories. I'm glad you created a section for comic books. I got a great deal of them to add there. The Toys & Collectibles section should be easy to fill up as well. This seems to be the biggest endeavor you've undertaken with Listal thus far. I'm looking forward to breaking in this newly designed Listal.
ape 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 27 19:21 -
I haven't spent much time fooling around yet, but I like a vast majority of the changes. A big one I like is the "Notes - Large Image" template for lists. I always thought that a wider selection of templates would be nice - I like to have choices.

It's also neat to see the new categories that have been talked about for years will be making their debuts on the site soon.

It looks good, though. Looking forward to the beta going live on the site in the upcoming months. Thanks for letting us in to see it, Mr. Tom.
Marian 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 27 19:45 -
I love the new version!!!

One thing I found weird is the following: When I go to a list (for example, www.betalistal.com/list/space-race), I see both "wanted" and "owned" marked for all items
mojack 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 27 20:22 -
it looks amazing i like the new features, Thanks for the Great work. I noticed when i checked my movies i cant view my recently watched and wanted movies. like here

mojack.listal.com/owned/movies
mojack.listal.com/wanted/movies

Also, I agree with Lamourderer points .

there doesn't seem to be a possibility to tag movies when viewing my recently watched movies. It was easier to tag them when I could see them all on the same page (a possibility for mass tagging would also be nice)

It would also be nice to have the possibility to tag the lists and the pictures. And what happened to the people I follow rating ?

moreover, I'm so impressed about everything else . Looking forward for its release

Absolutely agree.

The way it is at the moment, I don't think I really like the new profile. I understand it's not done yet, but it really doesn't look like a good idea so far. Other than that I really like the changes.
The Cineast 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 4:31 -
I like it, but with an issue or two. I can't seem to find the amount of ratings I've made, not to mention my most recently added items. On this current site, they are on the main profile page. I'm sure I will enjoy the final product though.
Coby 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 8:59 -
Great new features, except the new profile, I don't like it either, looks like an improved update feed... it would be great if we'd have an option to switch back to the classic one.
Nerdy Werewolf 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 11:36 -
I think it's brilliant. Change is good...it keeps us on our toes. I went and played with the beta site a bit, and I could list the things I liked the most, but it all looked pretty great. Thanks for the updates!! Can't wait to see the finished deal!

i don't like much sorry
Paulius 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 19:05 -
the switch option to old version is necessity for me... you can see a lot of info in old version at one page, and in new version u need to scroll through large images and click your mouse few times to see info you want. there are really great things, but i just don't like profile page...
Vix 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 6:16 -
Liking the new changes thus far. A couple of things I noticed while checking out movies:

Explore Movies:
Trailers: Would be nice to have the title of the movie displayed when hovering over the poster image

Individual Movie Page
When clicking on "Remove" it simply displays "Item is now unlisted". You need to refresh the page to get back the Watched/Wanted/Add to List buttons
I think it would be more appropriate to show these buttons after the action message.

Also, the message "Delete this item from your lists" implies that it will be removed from ALL lists and not our Watched/Wanted items. This needs clarification

Movie Review
The report button shows up twice.

The text "Add this buttons" appears beside the Vote count. I'm guessing that's a placeholder for the actual buttons?

On to the other features!
Vix 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 6:52 -
Lists:
Instead of showing the time since a list was published, it would be more useful to see when it was last updated.

A list that was created 3 years ago but was updated 2 weeks ago is more relevant than a list that was created a year ago and never updated.

Profile Page:
For the most part I like the clean look and how content has been divided except for the Collections tab.

Collections
The existing set up for collections provides much more meaningful information about a person's profile than the catch-all collections page.

I would rather see collections broken down by categories first: About My Collections, Favorite Movies, Favorite TV, Favorite Authors, etc with the option to see the catch-all items.

Updates
Is there any way to modify the number of items in the recent updates list? Here, having the last updated date makes more sense than the published date.

Would it be possible to display the last x number of reviews added in the left hand side as well?
Leiska 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 10:21 -
Fictional characters category sounds great !
Fraterlucis 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 15:26 -
Overall, alot of great additions here. And I do understand the Friends/Followers thing, though I second that, will Friends automatically become followers?

Also, I do have concerns with the profile page. While there are some nice additions, I don't really like the Updates page as the landing page for the profile. It's not a bad feature in and of itself, but having the sub About page be the landing page would make more sense to me. If I want to view a person's profile, I'm curious about their "About" profile and can check the updates later. Perhaps you can make this an option, to choose which page is the landing page for the profile?
Deleted user
Deleted 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 19:12 -
Very sleek. Not sure I quite like the Facebook style page updates, but other than that, it looks good.
Victorian Fantasy 11 years, 9 months ago at Jul 30 4:06 -
I completely agree with and second everything Fraterlucis says!

I think the "About" section should be the primary landing profile page, at least along side the update feed, if not by itself. Also, the comments should stay on the landing too.

I also would like to see MORE social and sharing features, not less. For instance, I've always thought it would be really nice if there was a journal type area on each person's page so that we can share other things we like without necessarily making a list. Sort of in blog style. Perhaps a person would want to share pictures, or quotes or recipes or some other things. It would make it more personal and flexible for those of us who don't want (or don't have) a bunch of pages on other big "mainstream" social networking sites.

On another note, the expanding of categories and lists we can make is a great thing. I wonder if the searching capabilities will improve too? :)

I agree with the others: I liked better the old personal profile page.

As for Friends, I think people enjoy befriending other people. It's human! Rather than deleting Friends, give them some new practical purpose, different than following/followers.

Everything looks nice, besides the profile page. I liked it the way it was and and I second what The O.P. said. I think the Friends should stay, having followers or following sounds too much like tumblr.

Thank you for the comments.

To address the main criticism first, The profile page will be getting customisation options next week. I will also be changing the default modules that will be displayed, I am going to add the about me section at the top left by default, you will then be able to change it to top right if you prefer.

On the beta site I can still see my 'friends' ratings for a film but it doesn't show my Listal contacts average rating for a film.

So, my question are:

Will the people I follow now become part of friends ratings that I see when I visit a film page?

I've added this back, for people pages also.

it was clearer when it was with stars, not points

Not sure what you mean by this exactly

Also, there doesn't seem to be a possibility to tag movies when viewing my recently watched movies. It was easier to tag them when I could see them all on the same page (a possibility for mass tagging would also be nice).

I will add this as an option

It would also be nice to have the possibility to eliminate some items from the recommendations lists if you don't want to see them (for example in Rateyourmusic this is possible). For example I get recommendations like Santa Sangre and Ace in the Hole in the movies section, but I already know these films and will watch them sometime even without recommendations. It would be nice if I could hide these recommendations and dozens of others so the really interesting ones for me would get shown first and I wouldn't have to scroll so much.

I have added the not interested links or watched/wanted to remove items from your recommendations, unfortunatly the recommendation list doesn't update in real time yet, this should be fixed by the end of the week.

One thing I found weird is the following: When I go to a list (for example, www.betalistal.com/list/space-race), I see both "wanted" and "owned" marked for all items

I've fixed this

it looks amazing i like the new features, Thanks for the Great work. I noticed when i checked my movies i cant view my recently watched and wanted movies. like here

You can click the recently added link in movies and then there will be a drop down called List type where you can select watched/wanted. I will add more direct links to these though.

Besides, are current Friends going to automatically become Followings and Followers? (in case they are not already).

I will convert current friends to followers.

I like it, but with an issue or two. I can't seem to find the amount of ratings I've made, not to mention my most recently added items.

I will be adding the rating total back, recently added items are included with the new update feed.

I will try and change this

The report button shows up twice.

The text "Add this buttons" appears beside the Vote count. I'm guessing that's a placeholder for the actual buttons?

I only see one one link for report. The add this buttons text will be replace by the sharing buttons on the current site.

I have though about adding this feature for a while, I will consider this after the beta site is released but my main concern is that if this is added then the site is trying to do too many different things.

As for Friends, I think people enjoy befriending other people. It's human! Rather than deleting Friends, give them some new practical purpose, different than following/followers.

I agree that is a nicer name than followers but having 2 options is confusing people. On the the current site the functionality from friends (show ratings etc.) was moved to followers a long time ago leaving friends to be just a list of friends.

Anautix 11 years, 9 months ago at Aug 1 23:30 -
The current version of listal generates URLs that don't change their name. I find it confusing when I change the name of a list or my Username and the URL has still the old name. An extreme example: First a list is called "The most beautiful girls" and later I change my mind and call it "The ugliest girls". The URL should change as well. How is this in your new version of listal?

The O.P. 11 years, 9 months ago at Aug 2 7:46 -
The thing is, Friends feels social. Following is unilateral and silent, while a Friend request can be approved or rejected by the befriended person. I noticed people befriending me and not following me, and others following and not befriending...
As for Friends' practical purpose, I always thought of it as an address book, sort of a list of people I could get in touch with and keep an eye on sometimes. :)
