Listal's 100 Movies To See Before You Die [Check New]

Opening - "These are films that every person should watch before the day of their timely or untimely death. It should include unique, enthralling, emotional and epic movies."
Voxy - "If you haven't seen these movies, then you miss out on a lot of pop culture and will probably be unable to interact with most people."
Furthermore, its a comprehensive list from people of a range of views. The more people we get involved, the more of a range we will get.
Right, we've had a load of nominations now. So thanks to those who kept at it.
We've got about 300 films nominated, which means we've got to concentrate more on bakings and making the list final. So the restrictions have changed now.
For this phase:
-You are allowed to back only 5 films and unback only 1 per post. You are not allowed to double post (i.e. one after the other). SO you can back as much as you like, you just have to wait for someone else to Back before you do your next post.
-You cannot back a film you nominated or backed before.
-When unbacking, could you please explain why.
-Also, new nominations are at your own disposal. Still require a explaining paragraph. Do as you will with them.
Definitions:
Nominating a Film - This is a film that has not been entered into the list calculation so far. By putting forward a films name, you must provide an explanation.
Backing a Film - Once a film has been nominated, you give your support by backing it. 4 Backings to an individual title earn it a spot on the list. Backings are the most important aspect of this phase as we already have over 300 nominatd films and we need to whittle that down into 100 films with premium backings.
Unbacking a Film - Blackmarking a film with an unbacking gives it a less likely chance to make the final list; it allocates a -1 score. Although it is counter-productive, I've already opened Pandora's Box on this issue. Only 1 Unbacking per post please, and also explain why you unbacked it.
Discredited Films - These films have received more unbackings than backings and hold a score of 0 or less.
All discredited films from the last phase are now stripped from the nominations section and are no longer part of the backing tally. You cannot re-nominate them.
Those films are as follows: Clerks, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Romeo + Juliet, 300, Ong-bak, Castaway, Robocop, Titanic, Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Donnie Darko, Fantasia, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Moulin Rouge, Bourne Ultimatum, The Passion of the Christ, Mirror Mask, Ocean's Eleven (2001), Grease, Independence Day, Little Miss Sunshine, The Chronicles of Narna: The Lion, The Wicth and the Wardrobe, Mr & Mrs Smith, Sweeney Todd, Bridget Jones' Diary and Blade.
All films with 4 backings will be added to The List.
If anyone wishes to find out what they have nominated/backed/unbacked so far. PM me and I'll send you your list.

Col? How can you unback Se7en, it has one of the greatest endings of all time, Kevin Spacey is a legend and the whole thing is deliciously ironic. Its full of my favourite things drinking, violence, sex, war and football.

I'm gonna back Raiders of Lost Ark, Memento, Children of Men, Star Wars and Fifth Element and unbacking O Brother Where Art Thou, and hope I don't incur the wrath by backing something I already backed :)

If I understand correctly, new nominations are still open, but not required. In that case I'm nominating another film I seem to have forgot earlier. I'm adding Ladyhawke to the list. This is one of those classics that seems to have a grandeur that is no longer seen in modern film. An epic tale of fantasy, love and revenge. Rutger Hauer makes his best performance since Blade Runner.
Backing: Finding Nemo since it did have a rather original story and impressive graphics. Also Dawn of the Dead (1978) for redefining zombie movies as a genre. And why not give Terminator 2: Judgment Day and An American Tail a bump while I'm here.

Totally backing
Ladyhawke (thanks vanious!)
as well as
All Quiet on the Western Front
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Once Upon A Time in the West
I already backed Star Wars - Episode V and VI, so I'm now backing the other Star Wars: Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope
Unbacking V for Vendetta
Reason: while I enjoyed the film (I'm not a comic books person), I don't feel this movie is for everyone. Also, not everyone understood the film's political statements.

I do what I can. I'm also gonna unback V for Vendetta. I loved, nay, adored the comics...but the directors missed the point entirely. It's a good movie, but it had the potential to be a great movie and failed to deliver on that potetial. It's the kind of film I wouldn't recomend to anyone who hadn't read the comics first as it's almost too deluded to watch.

Thanks vanious.
Could everyone from now on start providing reasons for Unbackings. Thank you.

Backing: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Corpse Bride, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, No Country for Old Men and Die Hard.
Unbacking: Uncle Buck. Sorry, not worthy of a top 100 for me. I didn't dislike it, just didn't love it enough to make a top 100 for me. Entertaining but not a masterpiece.

Unbacking Corpse Bride. It just didn't do it for me. Unlike the Nightmare Before, the songs weren't catchy and while the story was a bit interesting it failed to warrant my attention.
Backing Se7en, Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

New at this. So Here's my backing

backing: Dawn of the Dead, Citizen Kane, Rio Bravo, Yojimbo and Long Good Friday

It is a well-known psychological quirk of the evolved monkey that he automatically values newer knowledge over older knowledge, regardless of its intrinsic quality (however you want to measure that). It is also obvious that our attention spans...er, where was I?
Backing (3 obvious and 2 not):
Citizen Kane - This cannot be overhyped on either historic or artistic grounds. *Every* director after Welles copied what he pioneered, and if you ask any of them about essential films they will name this is the top 10.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Science fiction movies were nearly ubiquitously stupid before Kubrick. I watched it again the other night on my new 37" LCD TV and nearly wept at the beauty of it.
Dr. Strangelove - The blackest and funniest comedy ever made, especially considering what a cosmic cattle-prod it was to the somnambulent baby-boomers of the time. Peter Sellers also gave three great acting performances in a single film.
The Coca-Cola Kid - This is my great lost, guilty pleasure. I just keep coming back to this again and again. It features Eric Roberts before he disappeared into crap films to be replaced by his sister in equally crappy films. If this resonates, it will do so in a very big way.
Paris, Texas - The moody loner in me appreciates the glacial pacing in this, along with the stunning performance by Harry Dean Stanton, the king of character actors. The Ry Cooder soundtrack - which I have on CD and play often - is also excellent.
Unbacking:
Everything made in the last 10 years.

I can't believe I haven't backed Back to the Future yet, consider it done! I'm going out on a massive limb here by backing some corkers:
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Die Hard
The LotR Trilogy was simply epic. New Line made a massive gamble and it paid off. All generations should watch it to appreciate the grandeous scale of Tolkien's "re-imagined" world.
Die Hard owns.

And while I'm at it, I'd like to unback No Country for Old Men - While the movie certainly made an impact, I fail to see this as a top 100 film to be seen by everyone. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone in fact - unless they showed an interest in the story or the actors.

seriously, Speed 2 was nominated? It belongs in Bottom 100, not Top.

I get what you mean Thilian, about multiple Star Wars films, but sure Empire is better than A New Hope?!

Empire may be better film, but Star Wars is to one that everyone MUST watch. It has all the introductions, and concludes in an epic way with destruction of death star. Empire starts off assuming everyone knows the characters, and ends in a 'to-be-continued' style.

Ok,I'm new to this whole list here but I'll give my backings for it!
I want to back Dogma, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Rocky, The Godfather, Casino
I'd like to unback O Brother, Where Art Thou because I watched the movie and I didn't really enjoy it. My family all seemed to like it but I just didn't get into it. Plus I don't really like George Clooney.
I'd like to nominate Mallrats to this list! I love that movie and I believe it deserves some sort of recognition! I don't know why people didn't like the movie as well. I have a lot of great memories attached to that movie! That is why I'd like to add Mallrats to the list!

The Last Samurai
Pity I didn't see this thread earlier. Couple missing that I'd have suggested :(

I will put a supporting vote in for:
12 Angry Men
Superman (1978)
Braveheart--cant remember if I already voted for this..
The Sixth Sense
The Wizard of Oz
I will give a veto vote for Se7en...although a good movie as well...I felt I got my rentals worth when I watched it...it is not a 100 top movie...just a typical thriller with a twist at the end...nothing special in my eyes.
