Here's something that might work. How about we put forward a film that we really love starting with each letter of the alphabet? What I propose is that we go through the letters in order and people submit a film starting with that letter, until we have 10 films beginning with A, then 10 beginning with B etc and so on.

I would ask that people try to restrict their nominations to at MOST just two films per letter, unless things get slow, or we get stuck on a problem letter (Q, X, V, Z...). In which case, we might just come up with 5 of each! There will be no backing of these films, so make sure you choose something that reflects your tastes! The final results, as with the Top 100 listal films, will make a new list:

www.listal.com/list/listals-z-library-films

Please don't move on to the next letter until we've got ten for the current letter.

The format should be as follows:

A

1. Insert Film Title:
Insert description why you love this movie. Description-less nominations will not be included.

Please only choose movies you really do like! Let's hope this works.

NB: Films like 'The Firm' will come under the letter F, Films starting with a number eg 8 Mile, come under the number category that we'll have at the end UNLESS the number is spelt out in the film title.

I'll get the ball rolling:

A.

1. Akira

Akira is a post-apocalyptic masterpiece. A definite benchmark in top-drawer animation which still effortlessly holds its own today. A story that is very much about survival as well as protecting what is dear to you in a city that has officially folded in on itself. The ending scenes are somewhat surreal and definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but the rest of the film is just superb action accompanied by an awesome soundtrack!

2. American Psycho

A lovely tale of yuppies. Christian Bale plays this crazy @55 mofo in this darkly humorous, quite possibly social commentary, tale about yuppies. Most probably won't appreciate it seeing as it quite delves in the socially unacceptable, but maybe that's why I think this movie is so amazing. And surprisingly enough it's toned down compared to the book.

Oh and what about films with numeric titles or starting with "the" or "a"? Where would those be under?

3. Alien

An awesome atmospheric astronaut anthology. The original horror in space. The film is fantastic and created a whole new fear in cinema. It breaches the borders of our imagintion with a creature we could have never fathomed. H.R. Giger's best work. The cast alone is monumental. All legends in their own right.

4. American History X

First off Edward Norton is truly one of the most downplayed actor working right now. (Wasting his talent on "The Hulk" Dammit!). The story centers around the main character who is part of the Arirain(sp) Brotherhood. One night there is a break in and two blacks are killed with excessive force, so he is sent off to jail.
Here is the turning point of the central character to make a change before his younger brother ends up the same way. Whom is played by Edward Furlong.
Awesome cast, brilliant writing, and a touchy subject that many would not dare to try make this one of my top 20 movies of all time.

What a great idea ...

5. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

An Australian road movie that features two drag queens and a transsexual. An absolute riot of a film that features a storming performance by Terence Stamp.

One of the few films I can watch over and over again as you always find an outlandish line that you missed the last time round. In my opinion one of the greatest comedy films ever.

6 An American Tale! I love this film, I only wrote a review on it the other day. Quite a complex parody of the immigration crisis if you watch it carefully. Plus I like the Russian/Jewish Mice.

7. American Beauty
One of the more riveting films I've ever watched. If I hadn't already loved Kevin Spacey, this movie would definitely have done it for me.

8 Aladdin

One of the best disney films, a great performance from Robin Williams and some classic tunes.
Dionysian Child 17 years ago at May 4 13:08 -
9. Amelie- The world needs more beautiful headcases like her.
Dionysian Child 17 years ago at May 4 13:14 -
10. Atonement- A new addition to my favourites. Its shot so beautifully with such a great plot line. It could have become extreemly complicated and impossible to follow but it was masterfully done.

On to B now!

1. Blade Runner
Ridley Scott's dystopian masterpiece is easily one of my favourite films of all time. Based on a Philip K. Dick novel, Blade Runner focuses on Harrison Ford in what was, for me, his finest role, the reluctant and vulnerable bounty hunter Rick Deckard. A legendary performance from Rutger Hauer and some of the finest desolate and depressing scenery I've witnessed in cinema later and you have a staple favourite of mine. Thank God it came out on DVD again after all these years!

2.Blues Brothers

This film holds the record for the most drugs ever consumed on a movie set. It also has one of the most notorious car chase/crash scenes in cinema history. You can't ask much more from a film than a buzzed Dan Ackroyd and John Bellucci, in shades.

3. Billy Elliot

Set against the backdrop of the bitter miners strike in 1980's Britain in a tough Northern town, this is a tale of a young lad following his dream to be a ballet dancer. Overcoming all sorts of obstacles he realises his dream & wins over his doubters. One of the best British made films ever with excellent acting performances throughout.

4. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
This movie gives hope to idiots around the world that they too can like be most triumphant and stuff. Plus some history is involved and it taught me the important lesson of "be excellent to each other." This movie not only instills moral values and hope for idiots around the world but it's most enjoyable.

5. Back to the Future II
For being the only film in which I am able to eagerly anticipate the developments of the future rather than fear bringing children into the times ahead.
A great storyline that allows kids to believe they can save the fate of their shameful families and redeem themselves from the embarresment they heap on them.
Snazzy 1980's outfits with the coolest of gadgets and pop cultural quotes fill each scene. The film of my childhood and happy viewing at its best!

6. The Butterfly Effect

This film was fantastic. One man's mission to save the lives of his nearest and dearest. Beautifully crafted and enthralling storyline.

7. Batman Returns

I just love how dark Tim Burton made the reinvention of Batman. This is the best of Tim Burton's Batman films, Danny DeVito somehow makes the penguin menacing despite his size and birdy-ness.
Mr. Lays 16 years, 12 months ago at May 6 21:04 -
8. Batman Begins

Forget the four other Batman movies that apprently never existed. Tim Burton's vision of his Batman movies in my were more a tale of everybody else except Batman (mainly about the Joker in "Batman"). Christopher Nolan does an excellent job and Christan Bale is an underrated actor. Extra bonus if you are a fan of Frank Miller's grafic novels of Batman. They kinda tell the same story... kinda... A dark deeply emotionally scarred Batman. Awesome flick.

9. Batman again LOL :-|

Seriously, Beauty and the Beast.

A magnificent tale of vanity and true love. Disney's finest takes you into the French wilderness where a castle holds a terrible curse. Loads of catchy tunes, magnetic scenary and a memorable story to hold your attention.

10. The Boondock Saints

Seriously, Irish boys with guns a'blazin'? There's nothing else in the world that can make a girl's heart pitter-patter so. Plus, it helped instill a massive crush on Norman Reedus... But seriously, comedy and intersting re-creations of shots from different views makes for such a great movie.

It's time for the C!

1. Cloverfield
I'm a fanboy when it comes to disaster movies. Throw in a monster aswell and you've got me bought. The style alone deserves props. The storyline was gay but the confusion and disorientation that you'd feel in that situation was captured perfectly.

2. Chronicles of Riddick

A great plot, superb special effects & an excellent performance from Vin Diesel potraying to my mind one of the best anti-heroes of contemporary sci-fi. An all action adrenaline soaked powerhouse of a film.

3. Catch me if you Can

I love Tom Hank's bronx accent in this film. It gives you that 'one up on the man' feeling that a heist film does; but better. Also the Chris Walken graces this film with his presence...so it deserved every award out there, even a MOBO.
Mr. Lays 16 years, 12 months ago at May 7 19:46 -
4. Casino

Martin Scorsese's brutally honest tale about the affect that the Mafia had on the genesis of Vegas. Fantastic cast + awesome casting = A piece of mordern day American Movie History.

5. Commando

The archetypal action film which is filled with hilarious one-liners, cheesy family bonding scenes and more importantly, catastrophic body counts. Arnie pits his wits against a completely non-threatening villain in this 80s action masterpiece.

6. The Chorus (Les Choristes)
A delightful film about a music teacher that somehow ends up in at some boarding school for troubled boys. Singing and hijinks ensue. It gives hope that delinquent children can still change for the better if they had something better to live for. Plus the music is lovely.
Dionysian Child 16 years, 12 months ago at May 8 20:41 -
7. Closer

A marmite of a film, but I do love it. Whether it is true to the gritty heart of life or trying to be shocking it manages to be much more fresh, original and funny than any other mainstream film I have seen in a long time.

The plot revolves around middleclass but not quite middle aged professionals that you can love to hate as you watch their twisted lies and egos rip apart their own lives.

8. Casablanca

A remarkable masterpiece filled with memorable quotes, full of dialogue, excellent cast, and just a great collaboration of mixed genres.

9.Caligula

Some soft porn for the masses. Malcolm McDowell was born to play the disturbed, deviant; and my oh my does he do it in this film. A cheesey ,70's take on the roman orgies will always be entertaining to me. A bit of a weird film to take this list our of the 'commercial'.

10: Capote

This is an absorbing film that boasts great performances and an intriguing plot. After this movie I was inspired to see the film In Cold Blood and read the novel. Very poignant, brilliant and powerful.

D!

1. Desperado
- A solid action film that I like way more than I should. Classic gun-totting action and a heavy dose of eye-candy to boot. The perfect mixture of fairytale storytelling, shoot-outs, comedy and farce.
Dionysian Child 16 years, 11 months ago at May 11 12:38 -
2. The Darjeeling Limited
Another winner from Wes Anderson. Three estranged brothers embark on a train journey across India. Each obliged by a sense of guilt and brotherly duty to the other. Filled with blatant symbolisms and surreal touching moments. The best trip I had to the cinema in a long while.
PvtCaboose91 16 years, 11 months ago at May 11 13:42 -
3. Die Hard
It's in my Top 10. An unforgettable action movie - original, exciting, action-packed and violent. Bruce Willis as John McClane is one of the greatest action heroes in cinematic history.

4. Das Experiment
This film was rather delightful. Showing the corruption of power over someone. A psychological experiment gone gruesomely wrong. The suspense killed me!

5. Dangerous Liasons

John Malvovich plays the Vicomte de Valmont, a deviant member of the french aristocracy; and the worlds most cultured sexual terrorist. This film stands for everything I want in life.

6. Dog Day Afternoon
Brilliant tragic drama. Al Pacino is in fine form. He delivers one of the most memorable lines in cinema history in this film.

7. Downfall

Superb war film chronicling the last days of the notorious dictator. Excellent performances all round and a real sense of claustrophobia and deep anguish and disgust as the Russians close in around the doomed Nazi war machine.

8. Dick Tracy
Classic detective story with a whole load of unique and gruesome characters. The vibrant colours draw your eyes to every scene and the dialogue is fast and thrilling. The only time in your life when you would respect the colour yellow.

9. Dracula(1931)

A great early horror classic film filled with eerie. When Lugosi is on screen, it's pure magic..he "becomes" Dracula.

Just a great gangster film, one of the best in fact. I just love the scene at the end when Al Pacino's character Lefty, takes off all his jewellery as he faces his own 'whacking'.

Straight in with the E's
1.The Elephant Man

Here's a superbly acted weepy film; John Hurt never fails to amaze and astound me with with acting skills. Only he could emote through all that makeup.
AFIoscar 16 years, 11 months ago at May 13 0:34 -
2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

From the directing, acting, and imaginative screenplay with a few twists, this film is brilliant. Definitely a breakthrough film for Jim Carrey's career.

3. Ever After

I think this movie is very good. Its a modern day Cinderella with Drew Barrymore as the lead. Though her character is unlike the soft, weepy Disney version, she has a lot of spunk and doesnt need a prince to rescue her! But he's a nice bonus.

Still can't get over the scene about the cat, but was a funny movie.

Talk about Northern woe! Classic British film about a Pakistani family living in the North of England. Culture and religion clash and create hillarious consequences. Keep an eye out for the racial and homphobic undertones!

7. Escape from New York

A legend is born in the form of Snake Plissken. The consummate anti-hero has to drop into Manhattan - now a depraved, walled-in prison, to rescue the President of the US, who just happened to crash-land in this nightmarish vagrant-filled hell.

I.am.a.man. An immensely powerful & moving story about John Merrick. Hideously deformed but underneath an intelligent & sensitive human being he is rescued from a circus sideshow & gradually introduced into society where he becomes something of a celebrity.
