Other categories?

Is there any interest in adding additional categories?

Should this site stay for entertainment themed items or expand to cover other things? It would be fairly easy to allow people to list all the other categories in amazon for example.(becoming a social shopping site)

Also it would would be fairly easy to add a categories for things which aren't products e.g. travel, people, restaurants etc..

If I do add some more it probably won't be immediately, I wan't to get the basics of the site working perfectly first, e.g. editing of product pages, recommendations systems

I had thought that musicals and theatre productions would be a good addition, but I doubt that would be a very popular category... So I don't think that Listal is lacking any categories that it should have. Too much might just clog up the site and overcomplicate things.

Thank you. I guess the reason I am asking is that the site hasn't really got enough users yet and I am always thinking of ways to generate more interest in the site. If I was starting again I would have concentrated on one category. Since it's not possible to go back I thought it might be a good idea to use the multi category nature of the site fully. I am going to complete the latest batch of features and then do some marketing effort to see if there is still interest.

And instead of adding a catagory for everything, when everything else is done we could have a "Misc" tab and be able to create a simple database to catalog almost anything we want.

Yeah I was thinking of doing something exactly like this, means it doesn't take away the existing focus of the site but allows people to list other stuff if they want. I would probably have the categories done in a similar way to Platforms in the games section.

Right now we could also catalog our Vinyl in our music catagory but there's nothing to select and show the media type. I want to show something is a Vinyl or Cassette over CD and in DVDs

I would like to add something like this, I am not really happy with the way each item is a actual product, as you say it should be select album and choose format, select movie and choose format. A lot of people have tagged items with the format though.

This is another thing I would have done differently if I was doing this site again, the main problem is the data source, I found this site musicbrainz.org which may offer an alternative to amazon.

one thing I am considering doing is combining all albums with the same title and artist, for example :

The first 2 are the same but the third one is a 2 disc edition. The last one could not be automatically combined though as it has a different title. I think i need a albums table and then editions table, could get complicated though!

As for getting more people using the site, I think it would help to have available custom generated graphics or something that people could use to show how many movies they have etc., like the breakdown on the left side of a user's page in a smaller format. A quick link back could get a lot more clickthroughs? I don't know if I am coming across very clearly. Here's kind of an example for what I am trying to say:

The other thing I think would be great to promote would be the export/import thing. I think people would be a lot less hesitant to move over if they knew it wouldn't be fruitless in the end.

One of the big draws for me is that I can add import items: things you can't find on Amazon.

Actually I was planning to do something like you mentioned, i thought it would be also something that would work well in the userbars.org/ format. If you didn't already know there are already the myspace and blog widgets, which I need to promote more.

I like this idea! I think with something like this I would get rid of the standard lists (owned/wanted) and just have custom categories. I would like to have a set of standard category titles like 'My dream cars', 'Cars I've driven' etc..

The other obvious category is tv, a lot of people have already added tv shows via the movies section anyway so I pretty certain I'm going to add this.
