Thief Compendium - Crayman

The Crayman is possibly one of the weirdest and least explained creatures of Thief. While many of the abominations Garrett sees are part of the Trickster's army, the Crayman is apparently a creature that is much like the Burrick, but walks on two legs and has some intelligence.

Note that the comparison to a Burrick is not by coincidence, these are both animals that inhabit areas abandoned by humans and have some form of communication with each other. The Crayman, much like the Burrick, yells when killed or rendered unconscious and therefore will often alert others in its vicinity. Luckily, like Burricks, Garrett is not punished by murdering these guys. The good news is that they are a lot better than Burricks in path finding, probably due to being upright like humans, meaning they never get on my nerves like a Burrick does.

A very interesting thing is just how rare the Crayman is. The first time we see this creature is in The Haunted Cathedral, where a lone Crayman is found wandering the cave systems. Another can be found if you follow the water routes to a large open room containing one of the keys for the power units. The next level, The Lost City, then uses them as guardians of the Water Talisman, suggesting their close affinity to water. This is not surprising, since they are basically sentient crayfish (seriously, what other game has crayfish for enemies?). They then disappear from the game along with all other animals. The only other time they can be seen is as a trophy in Assassins alongside a Burrick head. One of the most drastic differences between The Dark Project and Thief Gold is the prevalence of these guys, since the main level they were in, The Lost City, no longer has any Craymen since the Water Talisman is no longer found there. Instead, we get a small cave near the start of Song of the Caverns, possibly as a way to compensate for this removal. Overall though, this update served to make a relatively rare creature even rarer in the world, a controversial move for those that had become accustomed with the original design of The Lost City.

Also note that Craymen are in actuality Crab People. They taste like crabs, but oddly enough look like people. Some say they talk like people, but I don't believe it, mainly because all they do is scream at me. When not in the world of Thief, they can be found dressing up like gay guys to make the rest of the male gender weak so that humanity can be taken over.

In other news, there are apparently two models for this guy that are identical. Crayman is the one used in the game, but we also have Craymans. What that apparently stands for must be subtle, because it is such a minuscule detail that they look identical to me. Seriously, switching between the two in DromED reveals nothing.
