Now, as a straight man, I have no qualms about admitting that I like "The Wizard of Oz." And, I once checked out a deluxe edition of the soundtrack so I could have the songs on my iPod. And one of the tracks was this gem.
When Harold Arlen and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg wrote "Over the Rainbow," they wrote a second verse, which was to be sung by Dorothy while lock in the Witch's castle, which went as follows
"Someday I'll wake and rub my eyes
And in that land beyond the skies,
You'll find me
I'll be a laughing daffodil
And leave the silly cares that fill
My mind behind me"
Although the verse wasn't used in the film, it is used in theatrical productions to this day (although as part of the main song; The only recording featuring the "lost verse" is from Jewel, as part of "The Wizard of Oz in Concert Dreams Come True" and her album "Lullaby"). However, a reprise of the song was filmed. Although the visual potion of the scene was lost (presumably forever), the audio portion of the scene survived. This is what I'm presenting.
In it, Judy Garland, in character as Dorothy, is locked in the Witch's castle. She weeps her way through the song, and, at the end, unable to complete it, cries out "I'm frightened, Auntie Em -- I'm frightened!" (Although the scene was cut, the line was retained.)
Although every other musical number was done to pre-recorded tracks, this was sung live on the set. This was due to the fact that it would be to emotional for Judy to successfully lip-sync. The scene was shot, with piano accompaniment, live on the set, with orchestration to be added in later.
Myself, not wanting to just set the song to a plain picture, decided to have the picture change through out the scene. I used Windows Movie Maker, and a picture I found via Google.
I know, it's a little scary that I know this much about "The Wizard of Oz," but I do. And, if you watch this, and you STILL think Judy Garland is a bad actress, then you should be castrated, so you do not pollute the human population.
