Netflix Instant Project for 2013

« Prev12 3 4 5 6 7 Next »

It's not 2013 yet where I am, but I figured while I had a moment I'd go ahead & start up this project for the new year. The idea is to recommend lesser-known films that you've watched & enjoyed which are available on Netflix's Instant Watch streaming service.

Rules:
1. Each month drop by this thread and recommend two (2) movies that are streaming on Netflix.
2. All films recommended must have been seen and/or rated by no more than 300 Listal users. (Check the film's Listal page & look at the number in the blue box over the word "Ratings")
3. In addition to the two (2) films you can recommend each month, if you have seen a film someone else has recommended you can throw your support behind it. There is no limit to the number of films you can support, provided they have all been recommended by others.
4. Do not recommend any films not available on Netflix Instant Watch.
5. Please provide links to the Listal pages for the movies you recommend, so we can be sure to watch the right ones (especially important for movies that have been remade).
6. Watch the films others recommend, then let us know what you think of them by coming back & supporting the ones you like!

Example:

Recommendations for January:
Film Number One
Film Number Two

Throwing my support behind:
This film someone recommended
That film someone else recommended
Etc.

NOTE: Recommendations & supported films do NOT have to be submitted at the same time.

And since it's my idea, I'll get us started.

My recommendations for January:
Tales of Terror
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

Since I have access to the US Netflix via the wonders of proxies, I can join in here. I won't probably manage to watch everything here, but I'll try to see some of it.

Recommendations for January:

Kidnapped
Exit Humanity

The first probably the best home invasion film that almost raises to the level of Haneke's original Funny Games. Exit Humanity is a great civil war zombie flick no one has seen.
the giraffe 11 years, 3 months ago at Jan 6 2:25 -
Excellent! I've added all the above films (well, minus the ones I recommended) to my IQ to watch.

Also I've created a list for this project which is now public. :)

My list for January will go up tomorrow, at which point you'll be able to see my rating & thoughts on it, but I've watched one of the above recs & really dug it so...

OK. It's come to my attention that while other countries have Netflix, not all countries have access to the same content. So if you don't live in the U.S. & would like to participate, I've got an idea.

First, drop by my profile & leave me a comment or shoot me a message with the films that ARE available wherever in the world you are that you'd like to recommend. I'll check them for availability here & let you know which ones I can find. Then you can drop by here & submit your recommendations.

And I think it's only fair that you be able to submit up to two recommendations that are available in your country (regardless of whether they're available here) so that other Listalites from your country can watch them too. Just be sure to specify which country you live in (and I'll make note of that in the main list).

Been wanting to check out Stake Land, so thanks to Starweevil for throwing it into the mix. That'll guarantee I get it watched this month. :)

Not quite as good as I was expecting, but it's a fun flick. I wrote up a more detailed comment on my Film Journal if anyone cares.

Next up will probably be Altered I suppose.

Throwing so much support behind:
TerrorVision

MY GOD this has to be one of the best horror movies from the 80s, period. The entire movie was just me scratching my head and shouting what the fuck at the screen as what this film refers to as scenes occurred. My brain has been destroyed!

My Recommendations for Feb-

V/H/S - www.listal.com/movie/vhs

House (1986) - www.listal.com/movie/house-1986

Beyond curious to see what everyone thinks of V/H/S. I really only liked two stories throughout and mainly gave a higher rating due to the last story being downright insane at times.
the giraffe 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 1 0:18 -
Been debating whether to watch V/H/S. Must at least be better than 3 Extremes II, eh? ;)

Oh man, someone beat me to the punch with VHS! Anyhow, throwing my support behind
V/H/S
House

And my recommendations for February:
Death of a Superhero - www.listal.com/movie/death-of-a-superhero
A really interesting Irish indie flick with Andy Serkis (best known as Gollum and other CGI characters) as a shrink and an excellent performance from the lead, who has to be one of the more talented young actors of our time. He plays a teenager dying of cancer. He draws comic book characters to escape his reality, only to have even them turn against him. The soundtrack is fantastic and compensates for the overall lack of a particularly original message.
The Pianist - www.listal.com/movie/the-pianist
Roman Polanski making a holocaust film doesn't really need much explanation as to why it's recommendable.
FunnyGuy 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 1 6:46 -
Recommendations for February:
Trucker
The Poker House

Throwing my support behind:
Bellflower

The Pianist

Sorry Hoot and Vieras I'm not trying to be a wet blanket but V/H/S is one of the worst movies I've seen in quite some time. I was just so bored I kept checking my clock every 2 minutes hoping time would speed up and end the boredom.

Anyways I'll be watching Headhunters next I think it's third in my queue so I'll just watch it next.
Hootsaidtheowl 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 1 6:57 -
And that's totally understandable for V/H/S. I know that a ton of people are going to hate. I think I liked it all because I really wanted too based on everything I kept hearing about it. The general idea is a really cool one and it just didn't turn out nearly as good as it should and could have been. I'm surprised to see a sequel was already made or next chapter if you will at Sundance. It apparantly is better than the first by a long shot I've been hearing so here's hoping.

I think I recommended it simply because I want to cause a friendly debate and see how many hate the living hell out of it.
FunnyGuy 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 1 7:13 -
Yeah I really wanted to like it but it just did nothing for me. It also didn't help that the first hour made me dizzy and sick to my stomach. V/H/S makes Cloverfield look like it was made with a Steadicam. The one good thing I'll say about it is the last story was kinda cool. You shouldn't feel bad about recommending it I got two buddies who love it and think I'm a douche for not thinking it was cool.

Oh man, I'm shocked to hear such a negative response to VHS. Or well, I've totally heard it elsewhere, but finally to a point where I can discuss it. What's boring about it? I can totally understand that claim with Ti West's short, but even that changes drastically around the ten minute point or so as the first night unfolds and the whole changes from dull holiday videos to Haneke-esque teasing of the viewer. The rest I can't understand at all how or at what point they're boring unless, you know, you're bored while watching or something and refuse to immerse with them. I mean even the first short with the party dudes makes a really good job of introducing these characters and throwing in funny dialogue to come out of them.
the giraffe 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 1 16:47 -
List updated. And looks like Hootsaidtheowl has already started a debate on V/H/S hehe.

@phillydude - Funny, I almost put both your recommendations on my schedule for February. Now I definitely will.

The shaky cam aspect of V/H/S did get to me a few times so I can see where that is coming from entirely. I did give a slight headache and I had to take a step back for a little bit to get my mind back in place. As for the stories themselves, I really enjoyed the last story and the Ti West one. Which was a huge surprise for me because I'm not a big fan of Ti West at all. The guy knows his way around horror but never knows how to finish something in my opinion. I really enjoyed The House of the Devil until the ending for that reason. Everything else was quite wonderful and then he just blew the pacing in the end, same with the Innkeepers which I was hoping would get him over than type of film making, but alas he did it again and made a less than stellar ending. He knows how to create atmosphere rather well and does so in V/H/S. Some of the stories just felt a bit lackluster when you find out the reasoning behind them. I think that's why I loved the last segment so much, it was completely insane at times and doesn't give a lot of answers as to what was really going on or what was going it all. I do love anthologizes though, so I may be a little biased in some ways towards movies like that.

Headhunters really surprised me I thought it was going to be good but man it turned out to be amazing. I have a strong feeling we'll see an American remake in two to three years.

Recommendations for February:
Death Wish
Barbarella

I thought Barbarella was really enjoyable and at the least Death Wish was interesting, curious to see what others might think of them.

I've been wanting to watch Rumble Fish for a while now, that'll be at the top of my queue!

Honestly, 3 is better and one of the best films from the 80s, but this is an interesting movie if nothing else. The pacing is a bit all over the place though.
