Avatar The last aribender: Anime or Cartoon

pure 14 years, 6 months ago at Oct 23 20:39 -
So today on one of my lists, I was rudely informed that avatar was not an anime. Which I really disagree with, I think that Avatar is an anime as well as a cartoon. Avatar was made in the usa yes, but it was drawn in a japanese style and also the word anime is just animation, which is exactly what avatar is. What do you think ?

Technically its both - anime is simply the Japanese term for animation. Avatar would be American anime.

However, by the English definition an anime is specially a Japanese cartoon. By this definition just because something mimics Japanese animation style does not make it an anime.

Then, of course, there's the anime style, which some people use to define anime. This is usually because that's how people identify what is anime and what isn't and thus genuinely believe anything done in anime style is a Japanese animation. Personally, I don't define an animation by its style - a claymation cartoon is still a cartoon, a 3D cartoon is still a cartoon, etc.

So, yeah, its both. But people are bound to disagree depending on what their opinion of an anime or cartoon is.

I can agree with that.

Dictionary.com: "a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality."

I think the key word is "style". If I wanted to draw an anime, does the fact that I'm not Japanese or living in Japan deter me from drawing it's style? Would anything I draw only be called a "cartoon"? Surely I can draw a manga rather than a comic book...

I've always considered Avatar an anime. Perhaps because I tend to see cartoons as being rather shallow and childish, whereas animes can incorporate more adult themes and topics. I've never cried in a cartoon, but there have been several animes that leave me in tears.

Avatar was developed in America, but illustration-wise it was commissioned by a company in Korea. So it's loosely based in Asia, if that counts for something.

If you cosplay as an Avatar character, people at anime conventions will know who you are. So obviously it targets the same audience.

Nope the key word is Japanese. highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality
sounds like I married a strange person by Bill Plympton and we can agree that is not anime, besides I remember when it was first introduced to American audiences it was billed as Japan+Animation= Japanimation it has shortened to anime over time. It's all relative in Japan it's just a movie. But moving on.

I am not convinced by the trailer that it will be any good. Not sure if they don't want to spoil a big surprise or if there is no surprise at all to show.

I will say I like the idea of animation being used for things other then cartoons, as an art form it has it's advantages when it comes to storytelling (the sequence in Kill Bill vol.1 for example), and that's what I care about most a nice story.

Who cares? The show sucks.

If you think it sucks lando ..why even comment here? Anyway. I think that avatar should just be considered an anime.
jenier lengvet 14 years, 2 months ago at Feb 11 12:24 -
It is purely a cartoon.

My favorite anime is made in korea. (claymore)
I agree with shyguy about alot he said. Except some Japanese shows fall into the "cartoon" category. Also, Anime is an assurance of quality and many fans will disagree to calling shows they like anything else.
What do Batman the animated series, aeon flux or the venture bros count as?

Actually, if many shows like avatar or the batman series i mentioned are not anime the term anime will stop telling me anything important.

I call it a cartoon just because when I say anime I always think "made in Japan" not that it's the definition. Plus I know most of my friends are the same way so when I describe Avatar to them I say it's anime inspired but it's a cartoon put out by Nickelodeon.
BRODO 12 years, 6 months ago at Oct 9 4:43 -
ummm, I think it's more like an anime-inspired cartoon. I don't gang up on people when they call it anime because I don't really give a damn either way lol.

That is how anime is made. Was avatar made this way?

By an american point of view it's a cartoon because it was made in America. By a Japanese point of view it is anime because it was made by Asiatic artists (Koreans).

It´s a cartoon by definition. Of course there´s no problem if you want to call it anime :) By the way It has a lot of american elements in it! It would be dificult to confuse it with a all-japanese show.

By a Japanese point of view it is anime because it was made by Asiatic artists (Koreans).

From a japanese point of view it is anime because it´s an animated tv show. Everything animated is anime for them. It has nothing to do with who did it.
