Give Movies a specific genre

Please use tags for that.

IMDb already has genres specified for movies. listal could import them from there automatically in the same way that it does actors, writers, and directors. There are many movie-cataloging programs like PVD, eXtreme Movie Manager, and All My Movies that do this. It shouldn't be necessary for members to add this information at all, whether in a tag or a separate field, unless they disagree with IMDb's choice of genres. Some people prefer the more specific genres or sub-genres that allmovie.com uses.

IMDb also has tags for movies--they just call them "Plot Keywords" and they could be imported automatically as well, although there's more room for disagreement about those. There's a lot of tags like "rice cooker" and "washing machine" that would seem like useless clutter because they have significance only to people who have seen the movie and remember how something ordinary took on special meaning in the context of the movie.

Agreed, this should be imported from IMDB - Its easier to browse movies and to instantly know what genre it is. To know more, you can look at the tag cloud and movie description.

tags are way more flexible and versatile. what exactly would be the difference? The import could be into tags. Should there be a " import IMDb genres into tags" suggestion?

More flexible/versatile in what way? Tags are editable and a special genres field could be too, like the Title, Alternate Title, and Description is. Once you get a lot of tags for an item, you want some way of grouping them. Every type of data on IMDb could be imported as a tag, but they don't do that because if you're just looking for what genre a movie is, you don't want to read through a hundred tags to see if there's one called 'Action' or 'Drama.'

You could argue that listal shouldn't clutter up a movie's page by importing every bit of data IMDb has on it because members can just click on the IMDb link on the movie's page to see it, but if listal doesn't have that data itself, you can't sort or filter by it. I want to be able to do searches for movies with genre 'Action' and country 'Hong Kong,' for example.

I dont see the harm in this being imported and displayed. Its especially good for tagless items. If noone has watched the movie, users can check what genre the movie is and put it in the tag cloud, but that just seems silly if you could have imported it from the get-go.
