This would be aided by being able to make lists of tags

Then users would have a way of marking tags as being related and describing how.
It seems like, in additon to lists like "Tags suitable for action movies," "Tags suitable for anime," there also needs to be some system for each tag having its own AKA list like movie titles do (ex. J-Drama, JDrama, Dorama), with members able to vote for and comment on whether its best to pick one and stick with it or to use different ones in different situations. There won't be universal agreement, of course, and there will always be new users coming in who don't know about the AKAs, so in that case you should be able to pick your preferred tag AKA to display on your listal pages whenever any of the other tags are used--in the same way you should be able to pick your own personal Primary image for an item. This would also help cut down on the number of tags. You may find all of the AKAs of a tag used on the same item in some cases, leading new members to wonder if each has a different meaning. It would also help in doing searches and filtering by tags if you could do it for all the tag's AKAs at once.
