The bonus MCD from 2006 s superlative 20th anniversary re-release of Death In June s 1986 album The World That Summer has now been made available separately. Simply packaged in a full-colour card slipcase, the CD contains six tracks totalling 20 minutes, which divide into two groupings.
Three tracks are taken from the long-deleted 1989 compilation album The Corn Years, namely Love Murder , Break The Black Ice and Rule Again . This version of Love Murder is very low-key compared to the version on The World That Summer, with Douglas P. delivering the vocals in a whisper instead of the album s unearthly falsetto, and the album version s tinkling keyboard line removed, although the dramatic church organ chords and ratcheting percussion loop survive. Break The Black Ice has lead vocals from Andrea James of Somewhere In Europe instead of Douglas P., who sounds quite a lot like Rose McDowall, and I think on the whole I prefer this alternate version. Rule Again is again a slower, quieter, less industrial-sounding version, with the martial noise intro of the album version removed and replaced by smooth keyboards. David Tibet s vocals (credited to Christ 777 on the album) are much more prominent, and the poppy, disco beat of the original has given way to periodic crashes of gong.
The other three tracks presented here are acoustic versions recorded by Douglas P. in 2006 of Come Before Christ And Murder Love , Rocking Horse Night and Torture By Roses . These are radically different from the original version of these songs found on The World That Summer, with musical accompaniment consisting only of strummed acoustic guitar and hand percussion like vibra-slap, wooden claves, maracas and bar chimes, presumably played by John Murphy, although musician credits aren t provided. The overall effect is very similar to the latter-day live performances of Death In June captured on documents like the Live In New York DVD and the Black Angel Live! album.
Whether you need to buy this release will very much depend on whether you already have the 20th anniversary edition of The World That Summer and/or The Corn Years, as there s no new material here. But those DIJ fans who missed out on those releases will no doubt be glad of the opportunity to acquire these songs. The World That Summer is widely and rightly regarded as one of Death In June s classic albums, and the six tracks presented here represent some of this important band s finest work.
