Description: The title of Martine McCutcheon's autobiography is Who Does She Think She Is?--the answer, if this her second solo album is anything to go by, is Kylie Minogue. On Wishing Martine ditches the string-led epic ballads of her debut, slips on her spangly hot pants and steps back in time for a bit of fluffy 1980s disco. The mid-tempo ballad "I'm Over You" kick starts the proceedings, which feature no less than five tracks co-written by Martine herself. The disco-thing is rapidly becoming a cliché and unfortunately none of these songs, unlike Ms Minogue's comeback Light Years, have the classic status needed to outlive the fad. It's all very pleasant and inoffensive, but just a little on the bland side and some over the top production swamps a few of the more sedate numbers. You've got to hand it to her for trying though, and it's obvious she has still to come up with the best album she is capable of making, but it's just a shame that there aren't really that many perfect moments here. --Jonathan Weir ...
