Strategies Against Architecture is an overview of the first 10 years of Einsturzende Neubaten. Strategies Against Architecture is an overview of the first 10 years of Einsturzende Neubaten. By the end of their first decade, the pneumatic drills and hammers of this Berlin band (aka Collapsing New Buildings) had become part of a more traditionally musical whole. They reined in the avant garde industrial punk (no more drilling through stages at London's ICA) to create actual tunes and melodies. Since 1991, their sound has been less raw, but just as playful. They may be acquired taste, but Neubaten have always energised European punk with their iconoclastic viewpoint. This beautifully packaged double CD includes a track jammed with mobile phone interference, Blixa Bargeld singing on helium and "Wuste", a dramatic piece inspired by the Gulf War where string-laden melody is overlaid with sounds of sand, rubble and burning oil. There's also evocative music done for Montreal dance troupe La La Human Steps and previously unreleased tracks from 2000's Silence Is Sexy. Most memorable of all is "The Garden", an eerily resonant interlude in this compelling retrospective. --Lucy OBrien
