Long-time veteran Capleton turns up the heat with his own inimitable blend of roots dancehall on Still Blazing, the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2000 release More Fire. Still Blazing is a highly recommended mix of "rootical prophetics," surprisingly gentle love songs, and the same type of reggae and hip-hop anthems that earned Capleton a strong following stateside. Capleton is ably assisted on his rootsier selections by Morgan Heritage, Glen Washington, and Luciano, whose buoyant vocals cause "Hail King Selassie" to soar. On the experimental front, Capleton's laid-back crooning rescues his live synth-driven slow jam "In Your Eyes" from being a sappy failure. When it comes to the hardcore style, the dancehall prophet is a master at rocking all riddims. "Woah" runs over the currently hot "Rice and Peas" sound, while "Punchline 2 Hit," one of the album's strongest selections, is buffeted by the vintage "Answer" riddim. "Cooyah Cooyah" continues the More Fire theme and features energetic counterpoint vocals from a very young member of Capleton's camp. --Rebecca Levine
