Description:
The Welsh-raised, Dublin-based thrush delivers a slow-growing album that can hook deep if you give it a chance. "Smile" is typical of her strengths; the chorus suggests Linda Thompson, but she shifts on a dime into a full-cry Sinnead. "One Hell of a Life," "Venus" (not the Shocking Blue number), and the towering opener "The Battle of the Trees" are also ideal for an audience that finds the Alanis generation a little too shrill and/or shallow. --Jeff Bateman
